honestly this is crap..gu 5.0l power steering issue's!
ok lads,
some info first-iv got a 98 gu with a holden 5.0l
so recenlty i got a reco power steer pump via exchange.
i didnt bother to do it when i first did the converison and the steering wasnt all that great, had dead spots and poor left to right(if ya get me?)
all seemed fine with the reco pump!!
it would steer good on tar going slow etc but up untill now hadn't had a great deal of time to test it out properly..
while iv been away camping theres been plenty of beach driving to go surfing etc and the power steer is absolutely crap when going slow and trying to turn.
tyres are on 15 odd psi and i just got back from doing some shopping in town and trying to park the truck on tar was a non event...just wouldnt do it!!
the belt is tight(not to tight)and has correct amount of fluid!
so this is basically a question to all those 5.0l gq or gu owners with the holden pump how they have handled this problem?? cos i have seen plenty of gq's with 5.0l running 35's on the beach etc
do you have problems??
dad was talking about putting a washer in where the spring valve is or something to get it flowing better?!
and or does the Marks kit supply brackets to use the nissan power steer pump with the gq?
i asked them about the gu and they said they didnt make one to suit the nissan pump!
or is there any clever person out there who can make a bracket to suit the nissan pump for me? cos i kept mine after the conversion.
im still away untill the 15th so im in direct hurry but it would be good to sort out when i get home
any help would be great

in gqs i have heard the gu pumps are better. have not done one off them yet,you have to mod bracket to fit again and get hoses changed back daz
I seem to recall that the amount of force that a Holden pump will put out, is not qite what is needed to push the trolls wheels?
Your dads suggestion to improve the flow, will be a short fix. You can get a pump rebuilt to handle the extra weight, but the troll pump will be better?
Just my two bobs worth.

so Daz have you have not made a bracket to suit the gu yet.. lol
how much different would the marks gq pump bracket need to be to suit the gu?
and i will be more than happy to pay to get the hoses changed again to suit the nissan pump! its thats useless off road!!!
Monkeycritter, who would be the best suggestion to get the parts to make it flow better?
oh and the tyres im running are only 33's /12.5, so there not massive by any means..and yes i never had a problem with the nissan pump, you dont know what you miss till its gone
cheers

im aware of that now Joel, looks like me and the old man have got some more tinkering to do when we get home from hols!PGS 4WD wrote:Its a car pump on a 4x4.
Raising the pressure won't help at low engine speeds as the pump won't be able to produce the pressure anyway at low rpm.
Joel
just wished i'd known in the first place that the gu pump could have been made to fit..
anywho its all good!
cheers guys!

Sorry for the slow response. Castlemain Rod shop used to do these very well. Give them a try, or contact rare spares for their suggestion?simcoe wrote:cheers for the quick reply's guys!
