BUSTED ARSE RIMS - NEW NEWS!

Post by crankycruiser »

Just some pics of some rims i bought from EWW...

The first one i broke off road and i figured it was just bad luck...

Since then i have kept a CAREFUL eye on them to make sure it didnt happen again...

I just got back from a trip up the west of tassie and this happend ON THE ROAD on the way home...

When we got out of the track i aired up and checked all the rims...

250k later at another stop i checked the wheel nuts and the rims again.. all good... another 200k down the rd and it developed a massive datsun wobble....

now when i bought them i wasa bit concerned with the holes in the the spokes thinking that this may weaken them. they did crack there on the first one.. but not the second one...

this is the first one i broke 6 months ago...
Image

Now im not having a dig at EWW at all, just letting ppl know to keep an eye on things.. I have a couple of mates with EWW wheels (different styles tho) and so far they havent had a problem.... also noticed some other companys selling wat "looks" like the same centre but with their own stampings in them...

NOTE: the centre is built from 10mm steel its thicker than it looks in the pics...

The studs by looking at the tapered holes.

I think Slunnie was asking if ALL EWW rims are "known for doing that" or just that style of EWW rim.

You can't just build wheels and hope they stay together.

Nissan wheels do the same thing and have gone to the smaller holes.
And thats with $$$ spent on design, testing and above all production field history etc.

Those wheels would be better aimed at tough truck etc with low speed / little vibration.

Have they been torquing down all nice and even Ray that's some serious stress for 10mm plate even allowing for the design. Have you asked for feedback from EWW, I always thought they were the tuffest shit around.

is it just my bad eyes, or are those stud holes ovaled out like the wheel nuts were loose?

I havent actually bothered to ring em as some mates tried to get hold of em late last year and no one could get hold of them...

and i understand that they are offroad wheels, so all im gunna get is tough titties...

Im not stressed, just letting ppl know to keep an eye on theirs.

The problem here is the bend in the steel (stress riser, both mechanical and metallurgical) near the wheel mount is too close to the dress (lightening) hole in the spoke (another stress riser).

Metal fatigue from poor design. For more info on how to drill/bend metals get a hold of some of the construction standards the aviation industry use.

Hate having a father big on mech eng (aeronautical) and electrical enginerring (double degree), some of the stuff rubs off  .

That's one bad design rim. Holes and bends in the spokes right where the spokes flex. There's nowhere near enough meat either side of the holes.
I guess (hope) they'll be redesigning that rim?

IMO i think you should follow this through. As the manufacturer and seller of the wheels, they have certain responsibilities (and legal standards) to uphold.

What would you have done if it had of separated while doing 110km/h down the freeway?

You might have been diligent checking your wheels and studs often, but also spare a thought for the other people out ther that only check them when they get a flat.

Scary shit.

I'm no legal expert but I'd suggest that the key phrase is "fit for purpose"

I can't see that these wheels are "fit for purpose" as on or off road wheels.

I'd be suggesting to the manufacturer and small claims ( if they don't help out ) that that's the key issue here.

There are others out there with this ticking time bomb....... this needs to be brought SERIOUSLY to the manufacturers /authorities attention ( helps if future action is taken - even harder for them to plead ignorance.... ) and you deserve your money back.

That;s just crap design IMO
( usual disclaimers )

It seemed like a much better idea when I started it than it does now.

I'm no legal expert either but I agree with you. Even if they sell them as "offroad only" they still have to be "fit for purpose" as you say. There are plenty of places where you can drive "offroad only" at sustained high speed like on a highway. I doubt they sell them as "low speed only" rims...

If they don't come to the party, you could get together with all the others who have experienced the same and get an ambulance chaser to do a no win no fee class action for you ;) :D

There is no coining on those rims. As they flex the mounting surface will come away and recontact the face. Eventually breaking.
Flat rims are a no no for highway use imo..

Contact the manufacturers and inform them of the problems you have countered. Your feedback and intervention may prevent further issues and any potential trauma for other users.
