i know the 1hz/1fz goes in pretty easy, but the 1hz is expensive being diesel,1fz (petrol 4.5l) will be cheaper , unless you can pick one up cheap, impressive motor in a 40 goes really well n/a or with a turbo kit, can p platers have diesel turbo?

which one would have better bang for my buck? fuel wise
I'm not sure if you can or can't have turbo diesel's, if you can a tricked up turbo diesel hammers, but you lose the fuel economy.
fuel wise, the 1hz (diesel) is better than the 1fz(petrol), with a turbo kit the 1hz will gain more torque and power and use less fuel than the non turbo diesel

so the pick would be a turbo'd 1hz ?berad wrote:I'm not sure if you can or can't have turbo diesel's, if you can a tricked up turbo diesel hammers, but you lose the fuel economy.

Havent seen any v6's. A mate is in the middle of putting a straight 6 ford engine into one at the moment which is something i havent seen but like his combo with the auto. which ever path you go down there are plenty of adaptors for all sorts of engine/transmission combos readily available which makes life pretty easy. A 12HT would be cool in a ute though
Hj61- ute chop, 12ht, locked, intercooled and caged
12HT ? whats this out of ?perko88 wrote:Havent seen any v6's. they came out in the 60 series, they are the factory turbo diesel option. they do get a bit exy if you can find them though. probably pick one up for 3-5G's then gotta throw a box and transfer behind them so all depends on budget but they are hard as nails and reliable and go hard when played with a little.

would the four speed be able to handle the new engine?

hey
i have just finished fitting a commodore 3.8 ltr in my fj40 .
picked up a vn v6 complete with rego for $100 and did the complete conversion with my old man ..fits with plenty of space tho my truck is just a rock toy couldn'ttell you how it goes yet as it isn'ton the road and is pretty radical anyway .
i have pics somewhere

i read somewhere that the v6 commys arnt the best engine for a 40's conversion
40
might not be the best conversion for most people but for my truck it worked perfectly as we needed a short length motor with good torque and power which i think it is perfect although i also run the wuto gq transfer with 85% reduction gears and gq diffs you can see its quite modified.
Under my hood i can fit the motor , v6 radiator and 9000pd winch in front of it still all behid the grill and with space to spare .

Re: 40
yea as this will be my daily drive i need something cheapish to run(prefably diesel) good on fuel and have some power.micka1 wrote:might not be the best conversion for most people but for my truck it worked perfectly as we needed a short length motor with good torque and power which i think it is perfect although i also run the wuto gq transfer with 85% reduction gears and gq diffs you can see its quite modified.

When you start playing with motors that were never in a 4x4 format, you need to buy adaptors to either mate a gearbox to the motor, or mate a transfer to the gearbox, and that is nothing but expensive.

hmmmmm might just rebuild the motor its got in it now and change it later on.berad wrote:When you start playing with motors that were never in a 4x4 format, you need to buy adaptors to either mate a gearbox to the motor, or mate a transfer to the gearbox, and that is nothing but expensive.
unless some one knows of a cheapish covnversion
Re: 40
UMMMMMMMMMM are we still talking about the VN V6? it's a dog for torque, especially low down.micka1 wrote:m a short length motor with good torque
you might have geared the bejesus out of it to make up for it's short comings (85% reduction box, GQ diffs etc), but it's not a torquey motor.

If you read my post it says for our application it worked well , we wanted underbonnet room , fuel injection and a cheap replaceable motor if anything ever happened , and i think $100 for a complete going car is a good price , cheaper than anyone had a 2f going for ! since have also picked another complet going car up for nothing .
Never said it was it has the most torque out there but is a better replacement than the 2f that came in it imo .

On a budget you could find a diesel of that era, if you can rebuild it yourself, or find one thats in half decent cond and turbo that motor, have seen a few getting around. If you can get away without buying new box's transfers, shafts etc etc etc its going to be alot easier/cheaper.surfute wrote:its a 74 fj 45
Q1. its a petrol so i beleive its a F engine.
Q.2 just not really expenise to run.
i cant really make any of them as no welder. but have a friend that should be able to do it.
its not dead. its just we doing a rebuild on the whole car.

we're going to get it rebuilt by some one else.
because it will take us ages to fully rebuild it.

for space and injection it's better, torque, nope.micka1 wrote: Never said it was it has the most torque out there but is a better replacement than the 2f that came in it imo .
