Gu, blowen 5th gear, best unit to use to fix this issue.

Post by darnoldrs »

I have blowen the 5th gear in my 99 4.2 GU. :x
I have heard that nissin is supplying the parts as it was suppose to be a recall to fix the issue? also i have heard that there was a longer splined shaft avalible as a fix and also a pressed on 5th gear shaft avalible.
From others experiance, what is avalible and best to use when rebuilding, about how much did it cost and any other tips would be appreciated in reguard to this issue, thanks. David

GQ main shaft and gear had larger spline area (they changed to smaller in early gu so they rip the splines off the shaft , then in later gu they went back to the larger spline) so you can get a GQ box and use the parts fit straight in the gu box . Or the new stuff from nissan will be superseded to the large spline type as well if you want to go new .
I think around 660 to swap in the GQ stuff if you supplied it or 2-2500 for rebuild is what I've been told in the past.
Nup not telling
you'll have to find out yourself

Hi David,
I had this happen in mine and after plenty of pushing eventually got Nissan to come to the party. They only supplied the required parts and i had to pay Labour ($1700 approx from memory). They just fitted the later model part with full length splines. If you have to pay for the whole lot it might be $3k? Thats Nissan pricing though i suppose. There were threads on here regarding it which i posted on. Try a search. Good Luck

I thought the 5th gear fix was <1000 though nissan with the new shaft and gears....

I'd start there before planning on buying a whole new box... I'd also for a laugh, try for warranty since it is a known issue (So are grenades), you might get parts free and pay for labour. worth a try at least.

nah not anymore sparksy has left blackburn nissan so they dont do a lot of that stuff anymore :x :x

when i used to work there it was pretty common, nissan has superceded the shaft and the gear and now comes as 1 unit, im pretty they have extended the warranty on this, give your nissan dealer a call and see if they will do it

Our local dealer didnt even admit that the new shaft would be different to the old one. They wont even admit that the 3.0l have an issue and certianly wont come to the party out of good will with supplying the parts unfortunalntly. Unless there is leagle pressure i can add to them which i doubt.
Is using the replacment shaft/gear (coumes as a set from nissan) the best/ most reliable way to go.
I tried to do a serch but with no luck.

Well i took some photos of the different gear and shaft in to nissan today, all of a sudden they got one of the machanics from out the back to me and are now experts on what needs to be done. They seemed at least a little bit helpfull today thou. I ran nissins head office today to be told, sorry it is out of warrent and they cant/ wont help. anything after 5 years is what i was told by the dealer.
If any one has got the gear/shaft replaced by nissan free of charge after this 5 year period, this infomation would greatly help my cause, pushing nissan to supply this free to me also. If you could PM dates of car and repair and what dealer it was done thru would be a great help. thanks, David

I think that the car is now 11yrs old how long do you think that it should be their problem for? I think your pushing shit uphill.
Having said that, I think since its a known issue, free parts should be at least offered. Specially since they updated the specs on the shaft and gears.

what about putting a GQ box in it ... you get a lower first gear and PTO capability.

not sure of the differences but i think its only gear change linkages?
