hey all,
Looking for the best transfer case for my new project. Needs to be part time, and manual shift (not electric or vac)
I can buy the necassary adapter for any of the cases.
After resonable low range, and strong, and resonable cost.
will see up to 500HP flywheel.
Vehicle is 80 series wagon

Transfer case

I am building along the same lines as you, I am using the Part time 80 series transfer case. Not sure if it is going to stand up to 500hp lon term, but is the strongest transfer i could find (and afford) at the time. Maybe the new V8 70 series, ones might be the ticket

the 70 series running gear seems to have trouble standing up to 70 series power so i wouldnt trust it with 500hpPauwolf wrote:Steve,

turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown
my reason for going with the cruiser transfer is so i don't have to angle the tailshaft, and also so i can keep the main fuel tank underneath. Hence that means atlas/patrol, etc are out of the question.

surely moving the fuel tank/whatever you have in the way is worth the strength and simplicity of doing it right the first time and throwing an atlas at it.
GQ is a non event, to get decent gearing out of one, your better off going atlas. plus then you get all sorts of options (front dig/adapter/length etc).
what diff you going to run in the rear? cause i don't like your chances of cruiser or hilux diffs copping 500hp all day, so a centred 9 inch might make more sense, hence keeping the atlas an option too.

The 80 tranfer is the one.
Ive got a ZZ502 BB in my 80 with 500 hp and havn't had any tranfer issues ( im running a fulltime with part time conversion ) in the last year and a 454HO BB (400+ HP) for 5 years before that and never had a transfer issue. Im now fitting twin turbo's to the 502 and i have no concerns with the transfer handling the 700-800 HP. They also are cheap because they dont break often and have good lowrange ratio. 2.5:1 in std spec.
