what brand winch to buy?

The saying "you get what you pay for" applies here too. Generally, the most expensive one you can afford for longevity, parts, service etc.
However, some of the "cheaper" ones on the market are definitely getting a name for themselves. especially when you compare $2k+ for a Warn to $600-$1000 for the cheaper ones.
I had a Warn on a GU ute, now going hydraulic. An electric winch is only as good as the batteries, alternator, wiring you supply to it (~$500+). A hydraulic requires the engine to be running. An electric wont run for long without the engine running but may be just enough to get you out of trouble.

Mako TDS Series Low Mount Winch
Features:
1. External Brake
All of our Mako TDS Series winches run an external automatic cone brake drum. This feature is seen in more expensive winches as it is perfectly designed for synthetic rope use. Running a synthetic rope on a winch that features an ‘in the drum’ brake operation can often lead the integrity of the rope being compromised as the massive amounts of heat that is generated by the winch brake dissipates through the exterior of the drum and directly into the rope. Having a positive cam lock external brake means that there is no heat generated on the drum thus keeping rope strength qualities intact and holding the required load as more pressure that is applied, the tighter the brake becomes.
2. Rotating Ring Gear
When a winch is needed, the user is generally not focused on taking their time and being gentle with the winch itself. With the rotating ring gear featured on the Mako TDS Series winches, this isn’t a problem. Boasting a huge 18mm drop pin that engages the rotating ring gear in one of the eight provisions provided.
Whilst 18mm doesn’t sound huge, when compared to the 2-3mm sliding ring gear pin found in almost every other winch on the market (which, under strain has a tendency of simply ‘snapping off’) this clutch operation design can withstand any amount of abuse.
3. Line Pull Speed
With an unloaded line pull speed of nearly 18meters per minute the Mako TDS 9,500lb winch is almost as fast as the famous Warn 8274. In fact, if the Mako 9.5 had a larger diameter drum (i.e. the same as the 8274) it would actually be faster! This is a great draw card with both 4x4 winch competition participants and the general public alike.
4. Higher Tie Bars
In a perfect world, every situation that required the use of a winch would feature a winch point directly in line with the vehicle. Unfortunately this is not the case and more often than not, a lateral winch-in is required. Doing this creates a build up of rope/cable on either end of the drum and quickly this build up jams the rope/cable against the winch tie bars. Featuring slightly higher tie bars on our range of Mako winches obviously does not eliminate this problem, however, it does delay this down fall and allows the user to winch for longer.

I'd go a used Warn XD9000... plenty around for $500, and parts available anywhere.
Hydraulic winches
Never seen one for sale, just wondering if they're any good/reliable, hard to fit (can they be hooked up to steering pump?), pricing and all that jazz. If they were any good we'd see em on more trucks right?
