fix 4y or 3rz

Post by 83-mud-lux »

how ya's goin..
havin a few problems deciding on what to do.

ive spent alot of money on a pretty much useless engine that wasnt worth it (4y).it has had over $1500 spent just on the head, port and polish and double valve springs and all that stuff.also had a bigger cam,new lifters and few other things done carby n intake wise.

dont get me wrong its a very quick little motor,it pulls 5th gear up the gateway bridge with 800kg of timber on the back.but thats WHEN it runs.

i have constant problems with it stopping on extreme angles and just idling whenever, fixing the distributor and new rotor button every few thousand kays and now getting gudgen pin knocks and carby filling up with mud and alls sorts of dramas with it.

so would it be easier and worthwhile to put a 3rz in it.i havnt heard much from other people about 3rz except good things.is there any bad problems that come with engine conversions and that engine..

not going to do it anytime soon but wouldnt mind working out if it will be an easy conversion or a PITA.

cheers..smiley..

3RZ - your vehicle being a Y series means you wont need to move the engine mounts to bolt in the 3R

naaah they dont  , i got told this by people before i did mine from
a 3y to the 3rz. i was like ohhh BONUS  . but i pulled the 3y out and tryed 2 dummy fits with the 3rz and it dont line up. so i had to cut mine of then reweld em :bad-words:. there is not enough room between the bellhousing and the floor, the angle is off so it fouls mega. but i dont have a body lift so wether it makes a difference im not to sure.
plus i had to space my mounts off the chassis because they y series ones are narrow as hell, was out like 15mm each side. id get a hold of some ln106 mounts if ya could, there heaps wider. wish i done mine with 106 ones, would have been sooooooo much easier.
just my 2c

why do you need a 2wd bellhousing?
im putting the 3.0l v6 out of a surf into my duel cab lux i think its the 3vz-e motor.

i have a 2.5 inch BL so it might clear the bellhousing right?
will this motor bolt straight onto the 4y mounts?
can i use ln106 mounts with an 88 chassis and the 92model motor?

sorry for the hijack mate.
cheers

ALSO :D

You dont need the tank for the 3r, you can just run the tank ya got with a no name 040 ebay spec fuel pump... I used diesel 2.8 clutch fork, but you could maybe get away with yours if its a passenger side slave on the 4y.. and ya can just jimmy up your current radiator. Ive had the best results with a copper 2.8 diesel radiator, as they are far bigger... them 3rz ones are hopeless when ya actually do some hard lugging, especially cutting through the soft shit up the beach. Mines been daily for years now its mega reliable, never gets hot, i mean never... beach, crawling, hills, highway, cant fault my setup... Thats with no shroud and the stocko engine fan...

Any other shit pm me ;)

strange, very strange, I have been involved with more then one in to a Y chassis, no moving of mounts, no BL is required

got one here atm to

na definately havent started yet.my car is daily driver.wont be starting till the old 4y gives up a bit more.im sorta looking around for a 3rz but just researching on prices and stuff at the moment..im an engine reconditioner so if anyone has one around thats cheap and buggered id be more than glad to buy it lol.

i will probably asking alot of questions cause im a ''young, dumb and stupid 17 year old'' so my family says.there messed up just quietly.

doing some research but can you's tell me:
-i need to know what gearbox to use.gearbox in my car at the moment is a g52 but its screwed and i need to buy another one but dont wanna waste money on another box if i need to change it again later.

-i dont know how to change a car from a carbie to fuel injection, all i know is that it needs a computer but are they hard to wire up.would it be easier to take it to a fuel injection place and get them to wire it up?

i still dont know if it will bolt onto 4y engne mounts without moving em.people say it does, other people say it doesnt.buddy seems to know his stuff and he says i dont so.

cheers..smiley..

mate its not as easy as people say. if youve done it before then yeah probably only a weekend job. mite be easier in a deisel? i know now that in my car you do need to do the following - bodylift, (unless you take a hammer or grinder to your firewall, leave your bonnet off because it wont close and take the bracket off that holds the hand brake, otherwise it aint goin in) you need to make 10mm plates up for engine mounts, the starter motor is on the wrong side, slave cyl is on wrong side so u need line made up, fuel lines are on the wrong side, brake vacume hose needs to be extended, heater hoses dont fit. it bolted up to my g52 gearbox no problem. spline is the same, using a 2wd bellhousing, and clutch setup, im up to doing the fuel lines, air box and wiring. ill let u know how i go. all up it cost me 2500 so far with motor, power steering box, bellhousing, comp and wiring loom, fuel tank with inboard pump, air box, starter alternator ect. with 100000 on the clock from goldcoast 4x4 wreckers who are really good to deal with.

heres some pics of why it doesnt just bolt in
Image

Image
heres what we did to fix it you need 1 of thes plates each sideImage

Other thing to consider is will you still be able to drive it on your P's legally? Pretty ure it will require a mo plate and I don't think you are allowed drive a car on Ps that has been mod plated

if your not welding anything you dont need a mod plate?

and you are in vic anyway, theres no rules saying your not allowed to mod the car in that way.

original poster is in QLD, going to a later model motor that is bigger in capacity and was not the original motor option for that car, in QLD that requires a mod plate
