p38 diff in disco axle case.

p38 diff in disco axle case.
does anyone know if it's possible to fit a p38 4 pin diff into a disco 1 axle case? it's a good upgrade from the standard sick 2 pin diff.
If you are bent on making the P38 diff fit, you will need to open up the big hole in the housing a little but all the way around - about 2mm as a guess. I think the bolt pattern was the same from what I recall. You will also need to grind open the slot so the crown wheel will pass through. That IIRC is about a 5mm grind to the inside side of the slot.

thnx for the replies guys,i contacted ashcroft transmissions to get a price for the factory 4pin diff and at 545 sterlings is not much cheaper than a quaife atb centre diff at 575 sterlings a well proven brand!!
but on the other hand you can get a tracktech (detroit)tru-trac diff plus a 4.11 ring&pinion at 535 sterlings.
where would you choose to invest your money?
daf.

Factory 4 pin and P38 would be last choice as they do nothing for traction and only overcome the 2 pinion weakness.herdwick. wrote:thnx for the replies guys,i contacted ashcroft transmissions to get a price for the factory 4pin diff and at 545 sterlings is not much cheaper than a quaife atb centre diff at 575 sterlings a well proven brand!!

Tru-trac and Quaife are similar, with the Quaife having better biasing. Both overcome the main weakness in the stock diff. If you have traction control, either will be a very good choice.
If you upgrade the axles and cv's the ring and pinion then become the weak link in the drive train.
