So my disco died already
After a few years over in Datsun land, my venture back to LR has been short lived
In traffic in Brisvegas in the Disco the auto made a quiet bang, and now it dosen't move - just makes a horrible metallic/whining noise.
Any hot tips??? As I had to fly back to FNQ, I just had to dump it at the only open auto mechanic at Milton - it was either that or take it to Austral LR - and I'm not a millionaire
Other ideas on parts in/around Brissy - prefer recon auto as don't want another old one to give up the ghost.
I've emailed British Off Road too.
If only it had caught fire afterwards, insurance would have covered it

Ok the Auto rebuild kit is very cheap from Ashcroft and they are not really that difficult to do. Alternatively try the boys at MR Automotive (they send autos down to Dolphine automatics but may have a good one there) as British offroad are bloody expensive on everything.
Damn unlucky for one to let go as i have never really killed one and ran a few in buggys. I would really consider getting a second hand one.
I do know Micka off this forum is about to list one and it was a really good auto and was driven right up to last sunday. It is out of aqua rangies old blue 88 model.
Cheers Nottie

It may be stripped splines in the transferbox-input gear, albeit that's unusual with auto's. In this case repair costs should be reasonable.
Good luck.
cheers

Re: auto
Very similar circumstances - in fact at first glance that's what the auto mob thought too. Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to attempt a rebuild myself due to living up here now.Hally wrote:X2 peter 110 I have had that happen to me I was just taking off from a roundabout very gently and BANG no more drive. good luck with the rebuild
Cheers Grimace, I will try MR and Micka too. BOR returned me their quote on a 2nd hand - luckily I was sitting down at the time

Re: auto
Grimace I think you need to change your business name - I got very confused for a second here, trying to work out if I missed the release of the bamboo reduction gear transfer cases.....phippsey wrote: Cheers Grimace, I will try MR and Micka too. Cheers, i was talking to MR the other day and they were suggesting the same transfer-gearbox spline issue upon me telling them the symptoms.blackrangie wrote:Dont pay any more than $2500 for a low k, reco box.
shop around
Cheers for the price info, always good to know where the ball park is.
Am just wondering now if better to suggest this to the mechanics looking at it, or let them find it?? I don't like to tell people what I think, in case it's something else more simple!

correct me if im wrong but if its just the spline, they can change it without taking the boxes out,did mine a while back, going up a steep hill, bang!
no forward no backwards.took it to mechanic and the founf it to be striped spline on the shaft between auto and transfer.
cheapish fix.
Now my gearbox is gone, and im getting my 22 model with 24 internals to replace it(much stronger)
a and b automatics vic

Talked to the place working on mine, and their words 'took the box out and it's complely stuffed'. I comfirmed with them that it's not just the spline and they replied no - which I have to believe not being able to see it.
I then rang around and basically MR could do the secondhand box and install cheaper - so sent to them since they specialise in LR.
Hopefully will go all according to plan, really sux trying to organise stuff 3000km away
So we'll see. If this one blows it I'm chucking a hissy fit and returning to datsun

Well brother just picked it back up, replaced auto and all.
This auto was out of a 98, so lets hope it lasts a few years yet.
Any special tips with these autos, i always thought the ZF was pretty bullet proof??
