Auto Trans Problem 80 Series

Post by fat496 »

Ok well i have been looking at an 80 series that i have found through a friend of a friend.
A little old lady owns it and it has been sitting for over 12mths because 'something' is wrong with it.
I threw a battery in it this arvo and it started first crank, but i couldn't take it for a drive because it's going to take a bit of gardening to get it out of her back yard.
She can't remember what was wrong with it, but said she was told it would cost $1500 to fix.
It's only got 180k on the clock, but after having it in D for about a Minute, the A/T temp light comes on.
It engages into D and R, but as i said i haven't driven it more than 20m.

Now worst case scenario the trans needs a full rebuild, what kind of cash am i up for?

Has anybody had the same problem and are there any suggestions?

Thanks in advance...

Matt

I recently had mine full reco'd for about $5500 by a shop at Wooloongabba in Brissy - top bloke. (Action Transmission, ask for Phil)

Otherwise..

For second hand boxes I'd use http://www.brisbaneautorecyclers.com.au/

They charge $880 for a A442F - 6 months warranty.
most other places are 3 months, and pricks to return if its no good, these blokes swap them if its faulty no questions.

Cheers

5500 for a rebuild, jebus!!!
Is that just factory specs or tricked up a bit?
Might just go the 2nd hand route i guess.
What lets go in them? I'm not really up to speed on auto's
The temp light comes on, but the oil on the dipstick is cold as.

Go though the link i put up you will find pictures of the internals and info on what they do but it sounds like the pump has pooed it self

The pumps are about $1400 2nd hand average.

And they seem to be harder to come buy as the 80's are getting older and more shops are using the 2nd hand market to save customers a few bucks.

Mine had chewed the pump to pieces, due to the previous owners lack of maintenance and bad driving style or lack of brains.

Ring a few auto shops, see what they can come up with.

2nd hand is cheap, but you run the risk of installing a dud box.

But with the warranty most places offer, its just your time, and oil you wasted

Hey mate this is going to sound stupid but id check the fluid level. My friends and i have have bought 3 cars with faulty autos and all of them had either the wrong fluid or almost no fluid. Can you drive the car? If its possible to drive it and it drives ok id start looking for the problem elsewhere.
i heart my hilux

It's a petrol, and i have checked fluid levels, seem fine. Engages drive and reverse, i drove it about 20mtrs, but can't get it to slip. that's not saying that it won't slip at higher speed/gears.
