H55F advice wanted:)
HI there. I have a 1988 FJ70 with a 3F on gas and the gearbox is finally rooted. 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear syncros are stuffed and it whines really bad in all gears, particulary 4th. Transfer will need replacing too.
What I would like is some advice on getting a reco/change over box for it at a good price, I'm in west Melbourne but would be prepared to go all over Melbourne for the right thing. I have seen some advertised on ebay but the descriptions are vague and they are in NSW.
Also, it appers there is some confusion about input spline count between models/years, can anyone clear this up for me?? I.E. What is the spline count for the H55F in my car.
Thankyou,
Cheers Brad.

Not sure on what the spline count is but you should be right if you get a box and transfer from any 60 or 75 series with 2F, 3F and possibly 2H motors (not 100% on the 2H box, some say the input shaft is different but I don't believe so).
Probably best to put a wanted ad in the right section on here, they do come up for sale often in the classified section but someone might have what you want right now and locally too.
Only thing you might want to look out for is that some late 60 series had a dash a dash switch for H4 selection.

Thank you. I know about the vacuum operated push button shift and that I can take all that off to convert back to manual, what I really require is a reputable business in Melbourne that can sell me a reco gearbox and transfer at a resonable price. I've been fukcud over already with second hand so it's not an option (More money down the drain)
Cheers Brad.

FJ70, I was just thinking, since your box seems to be well and truly stuffed now you might have some trouble rebuilding or changing it over for reco, might be to far gone without some major replacements.

Cheers, thanks heaps for that guys.
I have this posted on IH8MUD as well:
I bought a spare box a few months ago with the intention of replacing the bearings in it to fit to my car. Long story short, the box was opened up before I got it and it looked to have been hosed out and then siliconed back together, it was a right mess inside, rust on most parts due to having no oil in it, so I abandoned that idea, lucky I did, I now know it is the fine spline one!
So I took it apart except for the input shaft bearing, it's stuck on solid.
Now, knowing how expensive the parts are for Toyota I would not want to take my box in to get rebuilt, I'd rather get something already opened up and done. But then begs the question of whether they would take mine as change over....
I brought the car knowing 2nd gear syncros were stuffed so I've been double clutching it, trying to baby it until the other week 3rd and 4th died too, it was only a matter of time. It has the hose between the transfer and gearbox already fitted when I got it and was out of oil so i've kept my eye on the level. Bearing noise in 4th is beyond bearable...
It's not my daily so thats a good thing but I want to get it ready for more fun this winter;)
Cheers Brad.

Thanks Gibonator, i am half way though replacing the 4 speed with a 5 speed in my HJ60.
Not sure of the history of the box, it came out of a wrecked 55 series.
The problem is that my shifter is way up in the dash, it fouls on the heater duct and i would have to modify the transmission tunnel cover.
Anyone come across this before?
Sorry, cant get a pic as i am away for work.

Hi Hulsty, i could be wrong but i didn't think the 40 series came factory with a H55F? Someone had swapped the 5-speed into the 55 series that it came out of from at later model. I assumed it would go straight into my 60. doh!
Gibonator, i bent a big "S" into the gearstick so i could get 1st, 3rd & 5th. Yeah, i could mod the tunnel cover and do away with the fan duct that runs across the tunnel, but i would prefer to keep it nice, therefore, if i can get it confirmed that there is indeed two (or more) different top cover that are INTERCHANGEABLE then i will go that way.
Any clues guys?
Cheers.

FJ70, yes, you can swap over the input shafts, BUT: if you use a second hand input shaft on a second hand cluster gear you run the risk of having a box that whines due to unevenly worn gears being put together.
You can buy japanese aftermarket parts for the H55F, and cheaper than I have seen on ebay. Shop around and you will find a reasonable price. Try NQ 4x4 and crash up here in Cairns, they used to get a lot of parts from Lunds 4X4 which I believe has gone bust. There was another place in Brisbane (cant think of the name at the moment) something to do with landrovers or like that....

hulsty: It's a fine spline one and it had an alloy bellhousing, so I guess later than 1990?
Problem is, it cost me $600 and it is semi pulled apart (I started to pull it down to put the bearing kit I have in it) and i won't get that money back. PM me if you would like to discuss further:)
flyology: I was thinking that and I'm pretty sure I need to find a change over reco box to simplify things.
Cheers Brad

AgMech in Boronia are the way to go. Just bit the bullet and have it rebuilt. Wont be cheap but it will be as good as new. (03) 9729 4447FJ70 wrote:HI there. Think my 5 speed cost around the $2000 mark last time I had it done.

OK guys, I am armed with a new reco box, clutch kit, freshly machined flywheel and have fitted a new pilot bearing.
Problem is that I was supplied the wrong throw out bearing in the clutch kit and I couldn't bear to use the old one, so I play the waiting game again....
Also, does anyone know which way the clutch plate is supposed to go on these? From memory the protruding part on the spline on the clutch plate goes towards the flywheel?
Cheers Brad.

It won't fit and I already have a new one:)crankycruiser wrote:I have a 75 series 1fz box for sale for $600 only done 90 tho k... not sure if its the same?
Anyone else able to confirm clutch orientation? I have till the weekend when I get a chance to look at the car again, still waiting for the throwout bearing....
Cheers Brad
