BUSTED ARSE RIMS - NEW NEWS!

A lot would depend also on the age of the rims and the "reasonable expected life" of them by the manufacturer.
Get some metallurgical tests done on what the failure type was (most Universities would love this as a project under strict Professorial supervision - Masters project?)

Speedy holes are cool aren't they. They make things crack and fall apart evenly.
If the wheels are sold for off road use only then it would be an issue between you and the company on a fit for purpose level. If the wheels were not individually marked, invoiced and advertised as off road use only the company may be required to do a recall if a design flaw is noted.
Side note, weather the wheel nuts were tight or not, the wheels should not have cracked like this.
Well I'm guessing that they didn't think everyone would carry on like a big bunch of sooky girls over it like they have........
Overtightening (rattle guns) will cause spreading and metal fatigue as pictured in wheel nut holes. VERY common with alloys, but not so common with steel unless the steel is of dubious quality to begin with (cheap rims initially???).sierrajim wrote:Speedy holes are cool aren't they. Process is rattle up the nut, ***metal spreads, "Oh dear nut is loose - must do it up tighter next time", tighten nuts even further by hand or with rattler at higher torque, return to ***, up to the point of total failure of stud or hole.
I would be replacing your studs as they are guaranteed to have stretched threads/metal fatigue as well and would be contributing to the continual loosening of the wheelnuts, generally most noticable at the base of the stud/rotor/drum point (silvery in color).

Well, Ron from EWW emailed me! i never got in touch with them at all, as I said i wasnt too worried...
He is organising to get my wheels freighted back to EWW and they are gunna check em out.
Has offered to put some new centres in my bands for me!
Pretty happy with that, he's a good guy to talk to, and dispelled the myths of the new owners being "wankers"

Yes you can. New rims and not just centres. Surely would be more cost effective for EWW too.bogged wrote:sweet.. cant ask for much more than thatcrankycruiser wrote:Well, Ron from EWW emailed me! i never got in touch with them at all, as I said i wasnt too worried...

who says they wont give him new rims??BowTieGQ wrote:Yes you can. New rims and not just centres. Surely would be more cost effective for EWW too.
Since they are new owners, it seems maybe they are checking them out to improve their product??
That is a good outcome for everyone.
If the bloke wasnt interested in helping, he wouldnt have called, he would have just gone lawyers and defamation...
Good luck to him with defamation. But that said, it seems he is dealing with it very well and has made himself present very well.bogged wrote:who says they wont give him new rims??BowTieGQ wrote:Yes you can. New rims and not just centres. Surely would be more cost effective for EWW too.

Like I said in the begining I wasnt out to bag anyone out just letting ppl know wat could happen,.
I NEVER expected or asked for a new set of rims.... Its the game we play.. shit does break... (mind u not normally wheels!)
Yes they contacted me, sumone pointed them in the direction of this thread.
Im quiet happy for them to just put new centres in, as long as they are different to the old centres! Like i said.. I expected nothing from this... was just a warning to others.!
I think they have delt with it all very well really.. will go a long way for PR for them.

x2, if they're reading this then they should know that doing the right thing makes them look very good to the (very many) 4WDers here.nastytroll wrote:I don't see how deformation was ever an issue, no one attacked the company. Everyone knows early GU wheels crack and states it regularly, I have never heard of Nissan suing anyone.
It is a great response from EWW, not many companies would have behaved so professionally.
Personally I'd just want replacement rims, but only because it seems like less effort for everyone involved... but whatever really, new centres, maybe a set without the holes punched out this time
This is not legal advice.
I wasn't saying that they should give you new rims either. Just thought it would be cheaper for them to just give you some new rims and take old ones away to be looked over.
Either way, a big arms up to them for making the effort. Good to see a bit of after sales support.

Have to agree. The fact they are keen to work out what the problem is and rectify it, would greatly influence my decision to consider buying from them rather than avoiding them if ever the need arises. Well done to Ron from EWW.chimpboy wrote: if they're reading this then they should know that doing the right thing makes them look very good to the (very many) 4WDers here.
What's the difference between ignorance and apathy? I don't know and I don't care.

Good on them for trying to rectify the problem.
OK it might have been a crap design, but fairs fair..... they are now aware of the issue and obviously want to resolve it.
So hopefully this will turn into a positive outcome. Keep us posted.

( usual disclaimers )
It seemed like a much better idea when I started it than it does now.

I don't think any company wants to be bad etc fix up problems but some people do push things to the limit which changes companies mind on how they handle thing in the future.
I'd say they'll send out new rims and keep the old ones and do some metal testing etc just to check what the steel is could have been crap steel and cracked easy.
hard to say but at least it's fixed the easy and cheap way rather than 1 big mess.
