Patrol GQ and GU transmissions

Post by Mario »

Plan is to buy a GUIII manual with a bad ZD30 engine. Want to remove the ZD30 and drop in the TD42 with bellhousing from my GQ. My GQ will get a Chevy 350 V8. I'm assuming the manual transmission on the GUIII with ZD30 is a FS5R50A or B. Have someone done this conversion?

The ZD30 uses the FS5R50B which is fully compatible with doing a Chev conversion, they are teh same gearbox behind the GU TD42 and TB45 engine

The Chevy V8 is going to my GQ trail monster currently with a TD42 and FS5R50A. I want to take the TD42 out of my GQ and into the GU, currently with ZD30 and manual tranny for daily use.

So, the GU ZD30 manual transmission is FS5R50B? It can be attached to the TD42 with the TD42 bellhousing, right?

gudday mario

I'm looking at doing the same conversion also ie finding a late model Gu manual and ripping out the ZD30 and installing a Hot 42.

from memory (correct me if im wrong) the trans are the same but have a spacer plate that needs to be removed.
The starter housing also requres a hole to be drilled and tapped to allow for bigger reduction starter motor to fit.
Engine mounts to be cut off and TD42 ones welded.
Tacho wiring/electronics to be modded etc etc

I think thats the main bits, Check out SMASH250 profile as he's done one and it come out sweet.

Where in Panama are ya? I got a place in Coronado, Costa Rica just up the road a bit....beautyful place and great 4x4 terrain!

good luck

Mae, I'm in Panama city. Maybe we can work something out on our Patrols. Understand there's some good mechanics in Costa Rica. Pura Vida!

So, manual GUs with TD4s and manual GUs with ZD30 mount the same transmission (FS5R50A or B) ?

all Manual GU Patrols (apart from the 2.8L) use a FS5R50B Manual which is almost the same as the FS5R50A used in the GQ, the main differance is the top cover and the lack of a PTO cover on the passengers side.

So yes GU's with TD42's and GU's with ZD30's use a FS5R50B

The Chev conversions need a FS5R50A, FS5R50B manual or RE4R03A Auto
