80 Series Dash lights all lit up

Post by Toli »

Hello,

I have a 80 series 1992 GXL factory Turbo diesel.

At Christmas all the lights within the dash start to stay on constantly while driving, for example turbo boost, over boost, timing belt, oil, pre heat, alternator and a few others I can not think of.

Now over Christmas, when this started to happen, when I braked this would stop, once driving again it would eventially happen again.

As of yesterday after not driving it since Christmas day, the battery was flat so it would not start, charging it all day Saturday allowed me to start it it drove fine, however all the lights now stay on no matter what.

The alternator gauge sits on about half, I thought it should be higher than this? Would this all be caused by a faulty or failing alternator?

Correct, check the plug on the back of the alternator, could just be a loose or dirty connection.

Ahhh! the old christmas tree light trick!

http://www.lcool.org/technical/80_serie ... ights.html

Check the plug first, give it a good clean with a tooth brush or something.

Interesting enough there is a write up in this months 4wd action on pulling down an alternator.

Wow, I'm the same boat, as of yesterday.

Dash lights have been flickering below 1500rpm in a 2L hilux.
Havent seen any mud or water in a long time. Hopefully its just the brushes.
Is Toyota the best place to buy em from?

Can the voltage regulator give the same problems?

I bet it's the alternator on the blink. happens around the 250k mark on cruisers and hiluxes.

What defines these ''shagged alternators''? Is it just the brushes?

not neccesarily a shagged alternator. I had this happen about 3-4yrs ago, turned out to just be dirty terminals on the main plug on the back of the alternator, its still going strong and hasnt done it since

I found my lights flicking on and off as well, people told me it could be lack of flow or faulty sensor on air intake. Ended up being a dodgy relay for turbo timer.

$320 for brand new? Chinese aftermarket? I found that the hard way when I went through 2 before replacing with a genuine.

Ive had it happen a couple times in my 1hz 105. as has my bro in a 1fz 80.

Usually after doing mud crossings.

I just give it a good clean out with lanotec, and free up the brushes as they stick. And the section of shaft that the brushes run on i polish up with wet and dry paper with some oil.

Make sure that the plug and terminals are contacting properly also.

Also had a sierra where the alternator stopped working. Just replaced the regulator ($20 2nd hand) cleaned the brushes... good as new.

9 times out of 10, when people get alternators rebuilt it would be un-necessary.

dash lights lighting up.

Post by beno gxl turbo 100 »

Just recently my brother had some of his lights come in up on the dash of his 91 gxl factory turbo and i checked the alternator for him and was charging ok but i had heard on lcool that also when the air filter gets to blocked it has the little differential pressure sensor on side of air box that causes light to come up on dash saying air filter blocked which indeed it was so it was changed but it also lit up the timing belt change light even though it wasn't due for it and also the overboost red light was coming on in centre of taco so changed air filter and cleaned electrical connection on filter differential sensor and all lights out and running as it should be.Just somthing to keep in mind with dash lights.

Cheers Tony.
