So in the interest of my sanity of lack thereof,
I am trying to talk myself into not needing to turbo the td42 I
am fitting to replace the TB42 alcoholic.
I am wanting to keep it simple, and want the best economy you can
get out of a TD42.
So does anyone HAPPILY drive a n/a td42 ? or does everyone who
has one want a turbo ?
Were not doing any hardcore 4x4ing anymore or towing anything
heavy, and we are planning on an outback trip in the middle of the
year.
I am prepared to put up with downchanges and a slug, but is that
realistic, I have never driven a n/a td42.

I have a N/A TD42 and yes i want to turbo it cause i have felt what they go like with a snail on the side. That being said though, since i brought my TD42 when i wrote off my TB42 mav i never looked back, it is slower up hills with the same size tyres than the TB42, the torque it has is extremly impressive, in fact it revs lower and runs better than the TB42 up hill.

mines not turboed, did a trip last year, loaded up with fuel water 5 people, roof rack etc, cruised on 100 on the bitumen easy, off road in a touring sense you don't really need much power as you aren't going real fast, e.g.60-80 in 3rd or 4th - a N/A td42 has plenty for that, however extra power is good for towing trailers, campers etc, driving in the city and not loosing any speed going up hills.
I'd like to turbo mine, but in reality it won't get me anywhere i cant go now, and the difference on a trip would only be a minute or two anyway (if the NA motor had to go up some hills) which in reality is nothing so i dunno if i'll bother.
For outback stuff standard size tyres are also ideal and won't make the motor work too hard fwiw i run 265/75 mtr's and get between 11 and 14l/100
Put the motor in and do the trip, then asess wether you need more power, some people can't live without lots of power and won't be happy with the td42, just depends on you.

I was happy with mine before i turboed it, but the main reason i did it was because the car had no balls in the bush with the big tyres. So many times i thought to myself that i shouldn't have to change down a gear, when i was already in low 2nd.
I know going bush isn't a race, but getting left behind when you're with a bunch of Hilux's (new and old) got to me a bit too.
The on-road drivability improvd a lot, not having to change down gears or labour the engine.
Just build it and drive it. Then see what YOU think. Your expectations maybe different to other people... Some have to have 1200billionteen kw at the key, others are happy with the stock 5kw the NA puts out.
Theres thousands of nomads towing 3/4 of a 2 story buildng behind them touring aussie in NA patrols and are quite happy.
If you are unhappy with it, then turbo it down the track.

In saying that when i first got it, it was slower and have since done exhaust, fuel and air mods and gotten noticeable gains, and as far as im concerned no massive need for a turbo.
But as some have said just do it and you will soon know if you really want one or not

Mine is N/A and yes i want a turbo for the fun of it. But no there really isn't any need. You could always change up your diff ratio's. But then you will rev harder in top gear doing a 100km/h.

Mine is gutless as, almost half a mill on the clock. Not too sure it has much power left to lose. I did an outback trip on 31"s without a drama. Would sit on 120 all day happily, wound it out to 150 without too much effort. In the bush on 32"s it was fine, didn't like hills but that was about it. I'll be turboing it ASAP, it doesn't like the 35"s too much with stock gearing.
If you're just doing light bush work and touring, find a decent combo of tyre size and diff gears and I think you'll be happy with it.

Turbo it before you put it in, much easier. And you will never look back, even at a modest 8psi. Just do it! You will wonder why you didn't do it in the first place if you put one on later.

If N/A I would run a 2 1/2 exhaust with extractors, a CAV fuel filter and a snorkel and it will drive nice. Cheapest way to do exhaust is to use a factory turbo exhaust from a GU TD42T that has had a 3" fitted, then just cut the engine pipe down and fit the extractors straight to it. I have seen standard GU ehausts sell for $40 on ebay, I have been given a few from mates who have done upgrades too.
I still say turbo it though. Turbo's are a simple device and are reliable.

After about 200,00km in my GQ TD42 I have just turboed and regret not doing it earlier.
I was like you and pretended it was ok but eventually got sick of slow acceleration from standstill and constant changing of gears.
Now I find it much easier and relaxed to drive and really will end up keeping the GQ rather than trading to something more modern.
Just do it but do it properly.

I've turboed mine and NEVER looked back. What a difference and I did it with second hand parts and I'm running 9psi only.

It did everything I needed it to do, but have now fitted all 2nd hand gu turbo,pump and intercooler. It now runs 150hp on the 35s at 12psi. All dynos will read different but all this was done on the same dyno to give an idea of improvement. the improvement from 69 to 91 was just as noticable as the change when turboed. sometimes off road the lack of power in mine was actually beneficial.
only the first roll hurts, then its a ride..

we used to 4wd, tour, holiday, tow etc with a NA patrol and it was ok.
we then turboed it and it still did all of the above.
just better, easier and also safer.
Ther reason i say safer is that over taking became a safer option.
NA will still do the speed limit in any state its just how long it takes to get there.
non turbo is perfectly fine, its just that turboed is better.

yep..+ rip off all the emission kak, tweak the advance and plug in a fuel pump and she's away....if youre still not happy with it at least you have a great base unit for HP and the sky(and wallet) is the limit!

GQ with 30 PSI of TD42T.........
i recently bought a 93 gq swb that has had a dts turbo kit put on it. have to say i love the extra power you get from doing it.
if anyone is thinking about going turbo i say go fo it but make sure you use good quality gear and get someone who knows what they are doing to install in and dyno the forby for the best outcome and loger life of vehicle.
you do get what you pay for when doing this.
