Q. an Arb aftermarket turbo set up off an 84 4runner 2L Deisel.
will it fit onto a regular non aircon 3L 89-97 Hilux LN106?
will the manifold bolt up fine>? any reason it wont?
im going to put it on my 3L or sell it and i want to know its gona fit 3L's alright before i waste mine or someones time and money.
thanks guys

Assuming you mean intake manifold ?beinthemud wrote:A 2lt manifolds the same as a 3L ?
Yes, is a bit different on the intake end, but the bolt pattern to the head is same.
Toyota factory replacement for a stuffed 2LT-E head is a 3L (2.8 ) head, and all bolts up fine.

Hey i have been looking at turboing my 93 3L 4runner for a while and from what i have found most people think the surf turbo is the way to go, although one of my mechanic mates thinks it wouldnt be big enough for the 2.8 not sure.
a good artical on a guy that has done on in canada some where

it certainly wouldnt hurt the 3l to have a bit more power

The Ct20 off the 2.4 is Great little Turbo but has Its Limitsmotoking wrote:Hey i have been looking at turboing my 93 3L 4runner for a while and from what i have found most people think the surf turbo is the way to go, although one of my mechanic mates thinks it wouldnt be big enough for the 2.8 not sure.

The Ct26 or T28 garret Might be better

Yea, CT20 (Surf turbo) is the easiest way to go as it all just bolts up, tho as beinthemud said it does have it's limits and does start to run out of puff getting up in the revs.
CT26 & T28 are good but IMO they won't spool up as early which is where a small diesel wants the help (1800 rpm +), tho they won't run out of puff like the CT20.
Have been running 11psi boost in my factory 2.4 Surf (2LT-E) for several years now with no problems at all so far. EGT's (probe in dump pipe) get to 550 deg occasionally on long climbs.
Don't forget that a factory TD has lower compression than a N/A diesel engine, so running 11psi in a factory TD engine is about the same as running say 8-9psi in a N/A diesel engine.
HTH.

What would you consider to be up in the revs, the 4 runner sits on about 3 grand at high way speeds, but i would rarely go higher then that maybe 3.5 tops. I think that the help down low would be better for the every day driving.Dougster wrote:Yea, CT20 (Surf turbo) is the easiest way to go as it all just bolts up, tho as beinthemud said it does have it's limits and does start to run out of puff getting up in the revs.

Where would you look for other turbos, im would be definitly be interested in turboing down the track. cheers

t28 bb turbo for the win. Ball bearing = spools faster which lets you move up a turbo size or vary the trim in the same turbo, different housings etc etc, selecting a turbo to match your requirements is not as simple as saying t28 either, theres shitloads of variants.
ct26 is to big for a 2.4 2.8, well not to big but it won't give u the low down torque that you are after in a diesel, in saying this there are varying types, 3sgte, 1ggte, 1hdt?, 3sgte has ceramic wheels and i would stay away from it if possible 14+psi and your asking for an explosion, the 1ggte ct26 is steel wheeled but has different wheels again which will delay spool longer on the 2l/3l.
Its all been said, surf turbo is the best only for ease of install and $$$.
A turbo that won't bolt on, needs adaptors, new oil/water lines, intake piping, exhaust.
Running out of puff at a certain rpm is more than just losing power, diesels will fail and blow holes in pistons etc if the turbo is out off "puff" and creating to much heat for a period of time, say up big hills or under high loads for periods of time, when a turbo runs past its efficiency rating it becomes a restriction that is effectively pumping just hot air, which is where the problems start. Tuning the injector pump is another big contributor to high exhaust temps. At 3000rpm and you put your foot down, the turbo is at/past its maximum flow.
In saying all that a ct12 (surf turbo) seem to work fine from all the conversions done everywhere.
Beinthemud, what type of t28 do you have, bb, thrust bearing and off what motor, housing size?
Looking for brand new turbos, any performance shop, or a diesel shop that sells a turbo kit or turbo upgrade for the motor you are wishing to turbo is probably best unless you are "schooled" on turbo selection and know how to read flow/efficiency maps of the chosen turbo.
2nd hand, importers of motors, performance forums from people upgrading to a larger unit, i would stay clear of ebay many of duds have been bought through there.
