MTR'S vs PROCOMP XTERRAINS

Well I am up for a new set of tyres. 35X12.5X15 are the size of choice on a gq nissan.

I was just curious as to wether anyone has had some experience with the procomp xterrains. I have not seen many (any) rigs running these tyres personally.

I was going to get another set of mtr's but thought I should have a look around first.
The tires will be for weekend road use and general offroad/beach etc.

How do these things wear on the road? If you believe the ad they are super quiet and will last for ages on the road!

I would imagine these would be a fair bit more $ than the mtr also so that is one down side. Also I know the mtrs from experience and loved em.
But I like some variety!!!

So what would you choose and why?????

Might want to look at the ]Interco TrXus M/T. They are as good, if not better than the MT/Rs and quite a bit cheaper.

Someone said how the xterrains have a shit side wall but then I find this pic and have to seriously doubt the foundation for the claim!!

I reckon if I can get a decent price for the Xterrains I will go em.

I don't need a full on offroad tyre with this vehicle. My mtrs where great and seemed to last for a while when I was getting em rotated every 5000 but once they started to wear they got heaps noisy. It was a progessive decline though so you sort of got used to it.

Have run into my first headache with the X terrains! I cant get em! No one in Brisy has em they all have to get em off Jason @ Procomp. (As if I am going to go through them when I can ring him up myself!)

Have to wait 6-8 weeks till ProComp have some in stock too!

I've tried the 315/75 R16 (35s) on the GQ and really liked them. They were very well behaved on the road and worked really well in the sandy soil and rock down at Appin.

I've got x terrains in 31 x 10.5 x 15 on my lwb zook but haven't really offroaded em yet

They're good on road for an aggressive tyre, comprable to a regular m/t

They do look the part too

Apparently they last for ages, should go for ever on a zook

I lent em to a mate to put on his Jimny for a bit, see if he could fit 31's. He rang me the next day and told me they were the noisiest fuggin tyre he'd heard. The motto...... don't mount them backwards like he did, they have the rotation direction marked on em

I am tossing up between the same tyres for general road use but am actually looking in the 37" size for my GU ute.

I got the same sales pitch re road wear on the proc-comps but am a little wary of fitting directional tyres when they are going to do heaps of kms because Murphy's law always dictates you get a flat in the middle of no-where on the side that doesn't coorrespond to the way that you've set up your spare.

Price and the desire to be a little different may overcome the directional issues but because I'm probably not going to get mine until Easter, maybe I keep watching and see what and why you decide . . .

mate i had a set of xterrains. last 60,000 on the rd and still had 15 or 20 thousand left when i sold them. make sure you are sitting down when u get the price for them, they have just gone up in price like you wouldnt believe. thats why ive gone to a mickey thompson baja claw.

Yeah the directional tyre and spare issue was something that I have seen discussed before and thought about early on. I am just going to run a normal mud tyre as a spare as I think it is the easiest way to go.
If you have a flat then it wont matter what side it is on.

I have run x-terrains now for over 20000ks great tyre. wearing really well and no noisier now than when they were new. as for side wall damage bulls$#@. if anyone damages these tyres off road it's because they havn't aired them down as recomended by the manufacturer. and not to many manufacturers will put a waranty on there tyres for off road use. You can get a waranty on the pro-comps that is: Quote:: If you damage the tyre beyond repair during the life of the tyre they will replace the tyre. and thats not pro rata replacement either

The Xterrain are my favourite of the 3...

The trxus are strong and work well in mud etc, but the Xterrain drive a LOT better on the road.

the trxus are a little crap in wet weather driving, whereas the Xterrain was one of the best on road wet weather tyres I have had.

MTR's make a good cheap long distance touring tyre, but i am not a fan of them for every day use. I will continue to buy the for my big trips. but, i prefer the Xterrain for everyday use.


I'll be going back to XTerrain once the Trxus wear down a little more.

I am getting good mileage from the Trxus though, but they are pricey @ around $380 Each for a 285/75/16.... Sidewalls are damn thick and they weight a lot... and aren't road legal either :(

A friend of mine has the 35/12.5/15 MTR's and the wear rate is enormous. Also chipping very badly and one has a severe gash right across the tread. I know some swear by them but these ones are shocking. Bad batch, who knows.
I have recently fitted the 315/75/16 ProComp X-Terrains to my truck and very happy with them. Pull up very well on the wet bitumen under hard braking and work great on the rocks when aired down to 20psi. Slightly quieter than normal muds but not by much.

Well I have found out one more plus for the xterrains!

I had the opportunity to measure one and they are as close to a true 35 as I have seen in a while. (short of the centepedes I have in my garage!)
Actually they are only about 2mm shorter than the centepedes and they are on 8inch rims. The xterrains are on 10inch rims. Put the xterrains on a 8inch rim and they will prolly be bigger again!!!!

I have a set of 37' Exterrians and couldn't be happier i have had big lug tyres recently and sold them (37/13&38/16 Claws 37/13 Boggers) ive got a set of 40' MTR's i can't wait to try but are waiting for rims, I still use my 38/12.2 TSL Swampers when i dont have to drive to far. l look at the weather forcast and where i'm going and change the tyres to suit. Unfortunatley there isn't one tyre perfect for everything i just believe Bigger(taller) is better.

Depends on your supplier, but MTRs were cheaper by $30-60ea when I got mine.

Well I went out and bought a second hand set of these the other day as I needed tyres pretty bad. (I mainly wanted to trial the x terrains) and these just poped up!

They are only about 1-2MM less than new so in pretty good nick. Couple of scratches and nicks etc. On micky thompson classic alloy rims.

I have only done street km so far and I want to get a full alignment before I say too much on em.

They are certainly not as quiet as I had hoped but still very good considering the tread pattern and how aggresive they look!
It has been a little while since I drove on goodyear mtrs but in this case I think the xterrains would be a bit better in noise levels, JUST!!. X terrains only seem to get a little noisy at higher speeds though where as the mtrs had noise most of the time. X terrains very quiet at lower speeds.
Did I mention how cool they look!
I don't plan on doing any full on rock or anything on these but sand and general offroad I will be looking forward to comparing.

I can only hope they last for a long time as promised by the ads. As usual I think the important thing will be to look after them with balancing and rotation etc.

wouldnt rotating them be a PITA? you can only rotate front to rear unless you run them backwards or change the rim.
