Hey Fellas
We are currently on fraser island and the olds 96 multi-valve 80 series is having some auto-matic trans issues.
It seems to be in "Limp" mode. feels like we can only get 3rd gear when in "D". Selecting L-2-D doesnt do alot if anything, i can maybe feel what appears to be one gear change but it is super sluggish on take off regardless. Nothing changes whether in low range or what. I have disconnected the battery to reset the ECU. I have pulled every plug off the passenger side of the box and cleaned and sprayed with CRC. It performs perfectly in Reverse. The PWR button and 2nd start button doesnt do anything either.
Your help would be great i have run out of ideas and we have to pull a 2.2tonne boat home in a weeks time!!!!!
Cheers in advance.

Try looking at the Throttle position sensor and when you move the gear lever does the lever match the dash boardvSAHARAx wrote:Hey Fellas

if you disconnect the main harness plug for the solenoids you should be able to manual shift the trans but you will not get all gears.
my brother had this issue in his 100 series
was something to do with the trailer wiring (seriously!) and it was blowing a main fuse or link.
It happened twice in fact, both times it was off accelerator coming down a long hill. T
oyota put it down to the trailer wiring harness which doesnt make sense to me, but who knows.
Chech your main breakers and fuses, from memory it was the ceramic style main link or breaker or something.
Unfortunately you are unlikely to get a replacement if you are on fraser but i think when toyota assist helped my brother they just put a short across the (piece of copper) so he could drag his caravan home.

Is the throttle cable working properly? What is the fluid like?
You can try this at your own risk, but on the old a440 shifting problems could be cleared up by getting the truck up to a decent speed (as fast as you can) and putting the transmission into park for a few seconds.
I say try at your own risk because i haven't done it on the newer trans.
At any rate it sounds like an internal issue, as the a442 is still mostly mechanical in operation. You might want to start organizing another way to get the boat off

Hey all thanks for your advise.
Have been in contact with Ian from Miller-matics. The "O/D Off" light is flashing, meaning there is something electrical playing up. We can get 1st and 3rd, so thats enough to get it to the people who rebuilt the trans on the Sunny coast. My old girl pulled the 2.2T boat like a champ!!! I thought it was going to struggle but it never disapoints me in a time of need
Will let you know the out come.
Cheers

I remember when I was on fraiser in my old 60 series many moons ago. I had a starter issue. The starter wouldn't turn. Turned out to be water trapped in the end of the rubber plug end on the starter. I think it got there when i went through the little creek (eli?) on the beach.
My point being are you sure there isn't water trapped in the electrics somewhere? could be up in the engine bay
