Hilux diifs to zook hand brake

Hi guys, My zuk has early 84 hilux diffs under it. The hand brake adjustment is shot. ( No adjustment left on the thread and the bracket has been made out of RHS and isnt that good. I am looking at changing the design and was wondering what else has been done?

throw a ground anchor attached to a snatchy out the window...



or use the 1ltr drum style transfer hand brake,
or work out why your lux setup doesnt work, ie are the shoes worn too far to adjust out??
or change to disc rear with subaru calipers and GQ disks,
or go auto and use the park brake

try putting a launch controler in as your hand brake the same as the drag cars but rig it up to the rear brake lines if it your daily drive you might have to think of something else hope this helps cheers Tuls

The shoes and drums are new. Its Just the cable adjuster that i want to know what people have done The Zuk has an auto out of a MU, But it gets driven and i want the hand brake to work

That's fairly simple. If there is one thing Toyota failed at more then LSD's, it has to be park brakes. I've had a Prado, 2 4Runners and 6 Hiluxs and there has been one consitancy, shit hand brake.

I've had a 4Runner and 2 Troopies... Handbrakes work fine when they are adjusted up correctly.

If the shoes and discs are new, are the definately 100% the correct part?

Loosen the cable adjuster as fas as possible and tighten at the drum adjustment till the shoes just start rubbing - Then tighten the cable adjuster to take up any slack.

If that is done and the cable still has slack it is too long or too stretched and some adjustment/replacement will be needed.

Not technically, many cars run a drum brake style handbrake internally of the rear disc "hub" section. :finger:
But in this case with lux diffs, it should be drums not discs. It all the shoes and drums are new and in good condition it is an adjustment issue, or the cable has stretched.

The cable looks streched a bit but still servicable if i can get a better adjustment method. But what i am trying to find out is what set up are you guys using for the cable adjustment, where the cable meets the hand brake lever?

Ha ha,

Yeah I was clearly in my own world that day... I meant drums, obviously. I've had problems before where I've been sent an incorrect drum for the vehicle and it was only a very slight difference and it caused major problems for us.

step 1 make sure the drums and shoes fit corectly
2 loosen the handbrake cable
3 adjust shoes till they rub as descibed earlier
4 adjust the slack out of the brake mechanism there are adjusting screws on the back of the backing plate make sure that it is backed off before you adjust the shoes
5 adjust the cable
hilux handbrakes are good if they are adjusted correctly
not many people do the backing plate adjustment and it causes all sorts off problems

I presume you have hilux cables & sierra handbrake lever

try this for starters:
The leverage points need to be changed to improve the handbrake,
redrill the points where the cables attach to the levers on the backing plate(holes further inn to increase travel)

Next you need to move the point that the outercable attaches to your floorpan further away from the lever giving you a better range of adjustment .

i have hilux diffs an my handbrake doesnt work well i have reconned it an now can not work out where the lever goes that attaches to the cable does anyone have photos of a handbrake setup or info so i can set it up..
