My new 80 series - please post pics of other 80s

Good luck with the 4" lift hope youve saved up plenty of money
my 80 is stock height and i've had no dramas on the tracks
33's are good and will fit with out to much drama
I'd get the 16" gxl rims 1st then tyres up grade the brakes to the later model 80 series then 3" exhaust from beaudesert (yes the mandrel bent 1)
But before i spent any money on it at all
get the vin number of it head down to your local toyota dealer and check if the big end bearing have been replaced
not very costly to get done but real expencive if they let go
nice gear knobs

[quote="RN"]So do you support your local vendor...not if it is going to cost me almost double. [quote]
Wont need 4 inch if only fitting 33's
2 + 2 will fit 35's
But like previously said upgrade brakes & 16 nch wheels
Cheers Dan

The upgraded brakes are overrated. You're not going to go fast in a turbo diesel so you don't need to stop quick. Plus you can keep the 15 inch rims which makes getting second hand tyres cheap and easy (if you're into that)
I had a 4 inch lift. It does cost a lot to do right. Things like drop arms, double cardon joins, part time kits you think you can get away without, but when you try it doesn't work at all on road.
The best bet really is 2 inch, which will clear 33s no worries. If you think you'll go bigger tyres, 36/37 they will fit with 2 inch spring and a 2 inch body lift. You will avoid major driveline hassles and engineering/defect issues too.
But first and foremost you should start with general repairs first (ie big end bearings). Suspension bushes are also overlooked. That's an easy 1 gorilla right there if you go genuine (which really are the best) for parts alone.
Just my advice from experience.
And here's my 80 with 4 inch!
the 33's look small because they are. 37's would look the goods.

It's really only a matter of time before Bogged states how superior the Patrols are, DRS says patrols are teh ghayness, dat383 says that's a slanderous copy of a superior product, chimpboy calls him on it, AJF throws in a pencil joke, I go and rub one out whilst waiting for something interesting to happen, RN calls someone a hoon, Longlux mentions trains, and Ruff has a whine about jerkoff's in the classifieds. It's a house of cards just waiting for a sneeze.

Thanks for all the replys and photos guys
I'm going to get the motor looked at this week hopefully. Has a nock/tick in the top of the motor. Thinking its just the injectors. Also will get the big ends done as I know for a fact that they havent been done once and the car has nearly 400,000k's on the clock.
I know that I don't need to run a 4inch lift to fit 33's and that a 2inch lift will fit 35's snug but I still want at least a 4-5 inch lift all up. Mainly for looks than anything . I realise that a 4-5 inch suspension lift is quiet expensive at around $4000+ and that a 3 inch lift would work out a lot cheaper as I wouldnt have to buy new drop arms at $1500. To me it seems like a good compromise would be to go with a 3 inch suspension and 2 inch body lift. However I don't know all that much about body lifts and wouldnt mind someone giving me a rough idea how much they are worth .. ive heard about $800. I dont like the fact that you have to mess around with the radiator being lower and not getting the right air flow and the bar work ending up 2 inches below the car if done cheaply haha. Can you just buy full kits that will supply brake line extensions etc? and do the blocks have to be aliminium to get the lift engineered? ( Living in Queensland I'm just a little concerned with QLD Transport haha ) I'm looking at running the 33's on road and having a set of 35's+ for off. Just on another note the car has a kaymar eng rear bar. Does anyone know what a swing away wheel carrier is for one?
Cheers for all the advice guys

Hey, you're the mod, but I think most of the brand specific sections have picture threads. They may not be tech per se but if I was searching 80's pics, I wouldn't be looking in shit chat. JMO.

Ditto and having driven an early 80 compared to newer trucks I would still say it was a good thing regardless but especially if the tyres are any bigger or you want to tow just about anything. For a heavy truck they are shite brakes and obviously Toyota realised this pretty quick seeing as they addressed them within 2 years.bogged wrote:I would never say upgraded brakes would be overrated in any 4wd that gets modded.oldmate wrote:The upgraded brakes are overrated.
you can't be too concerned about Qld Tpt if you are thinking of running a 4" lift just for looks. You have a better chance of getting the 2 + 2 as the body lift can be aplied for in writing (but still inspected I think) and 2" lift shouldn't need engineering bbut not sure about both together. I don't think you can get drop arms engineered in Qld and they can still ping you for running you 35's to and from anywhere or even up the beach apparently.Grylls wrote:Thanks for all the replys and photos guys

Looks is never a reason to do anything to a 4wds suspension, you should be aiming to do the smallest possible lift to make your truck do what you want.Grylls wrote:

You'll need a 3in lift to fit 35s.

I now run the superflex arms in the front.. I stopped using my link cos it was set up for the 7" lift and i CBF fabbing up another housing to suit the lower height. Also to hard to put back to std with the link in too..
