If you have never rebuilt a turbo save yourself the headache and get it done, its got to be balanced anyway so you wont be able to do it yourself anyway.
The kits are 70-90$ on ebay.
BTW the standard turbo was terrible on my GQ and I always thought it would be, it boosted way to low in rpm. Not a problem around town but it was terrible in low range.
Look for a T4 with .96 or 1.06 exhaust much much better even using your standard VL compressor wheel.
This is what if found anyway, have turboed just a few RB30's in my time.
Also if you realy want that turbo check for cracks down the inlet to the turbine housing and around wastegate offen they are destined for the bin.

What engine does your patrol have rabs?
FWIW, although i'm more than capable of rebuilding turbos, i'd just as soon send it to a workshop for a rebuild. A basic rebuild will cost between $350 and $600, and a rebuild with high flow and other tweaks can cost up to $1300.
At least a workshop will give you some warranty.

rofl! do you go out bush u want boost low down to keep the car moving... keep traction.. t4 would be for a big hp engine.. laggy boost would be crap to drive out in the bushBrunsy wrote:If you have never rebuilt a turbo save yourself the headache and get it done, its got to be balanced anyway so you wont be able to do it yourself anyway.

I run a VG30DET turbo on my TD42 and it suits me perfectly, starts to make boost at 1200RPM and is full boost by 1800RPM. These turbos are very close in spec to the RB30ET units, with the exception of ceramic turbine wheel and possibly roller bearings in the VG30DET units.
As cooki said, if you want to buy a new one (not sure what your budget is), then the GT28 disco potato is the go for sure.

I ran a VG30DET turbo on a VL I used to have, bolted straight up to the exhaust manifold, so if the OP has got a manifold that suits the VL T3 then it should bolt on. Just make sure the boost is below 1bar otherwise you will end up with the exhaust wheel in you exhaust....... ask me how I knowcoxy321 wrote:I run a VG30DET turbo on my TD42 and it suits me perfectly, starts to make boost at 1200RPM and is full boost by 1800RPM. Cost around $600 7-8 years ago from a jap importer.
appologies, I assumed it was an RB30.
I dont know about needing boost in low range.........
VG30 turbo is very similar to VL t3, I have had one and believe it is a far better and more responsive turbo however they are getting long in the tooth and I dont believe you can rebuild the CHRA or core, so dont pay too much for one.

VG30DET turbo's can be rebuilt and hi-flowed without any dramas. I was quoted $700 for a full rebuild, and $1300 for a rebuild with steel exhaust turbine and custom tuning to suit my own requirements (hi-flow, housings etc). Realistically though, you might as well buy a new unit for those prices. I think i will be going for a custom T3 when i eventually replace my current turbo.Brunsy wrote:appologies, I assumed it was an RB30.
