Thud or clunck on take off? 100 Series
Hey guys,
I have just purchased a 100 series 99 model snowy and I love it ! However it does have a small thud or clunk that you feel when you are taking off from a stand start? It is very slight and it does not happen everytime?
I searched this forum and noticed that the 200 series has what i think may be a similar thing. From what I have gathered it seems to have something to do with the tailshaft?
Can anyone else give me some ideas or inform me a little more about this? Is this a "big" problem? Will this effect something else if not fixed straight away?

drive shaft spline
diff backlash"
Is this a major issue? will it effect the rest of the drive line and cause something to go wrong?
I just need to know if I can drive the car back to NSW from Vic?
get under the car and grab your tail shafts front and rear at each uni joint or slip point and try to shake or wobble them, there should be minimal or no play.
if a uni joint has had it and you drive it a long way it could flog out and drop your drive shaft onto the hwy which could get messy. though unlikely.
play in the splines is not likely to cause major issues on your drive unless its excessive. but will get worse with driving.
both of these issues would also be likely to be giving you some wheel balance type wobbles at higher speeds, often on overrun - like when you back of the gas at 100 or so.
if its a bush it should be fine for the drive but sort it soon.
I would personally probably drive it without a second thought and sort it at home. but thats just me.
*there's a rock, drive over it :) there's a bigger rock, drive over it  there's an even bigger rock, oops broke it  Upgrade broken bit :bad-words:

I have a similar thud in my hilux (IFS). Its mainly noticeable when turning slightly on take off. IE turning right from a stop sign. Also does it when your turning into a driveway. It is a scarey noise. The only thing I havn't recently replaced up front is the Upper control arm bushes. Mainly as it is a prick of a job.flyinwall wrote:i would be looking at lower control arms get under and have a look at the bushes at both ends

On my last trip to pedders I was advised they were on the way out so i'm hoping they are the problem.
Not sure if your 100 has a similar setup to my hilux, if so, i'd be checking these out.
depending on the shaft design, too much grease in the slip spline can cause the two parts to jack out and put alot of load on output/pinion bearings.
The shaft will usually have a grease relief point in there for this but they sometime get clogged up and dont work.

Just grease the uni's till you see it purge the seals, and the slip joint should only take bout 3-4 pumps every 5000klms or service intervils.
