89 surf 2lt blowing 20A engine fuse after replacing alt

Post by Rory »

so basicly, a mate of mines brought a 89 surf with a 2lt in it.
when he got it, all dash lights were on and battery wasnt charging.
Hes replaced the alternator, now its blowing the 20a engine fuse in the drivers kick trim.

is the fuse blowing immediately or intermittently? Im not sure what runs off that fuse with diesel motors, have you tried disconnecting the alternator?

it blows immediatly, with the alternator disconneted, it holds in.
Leads me tobelive its a stuffed alternator, but the wreckers assures him it was tested and working 100%.

If the wrecker is so sure, he won't have a problem swapping it over then.
Will at the very least mean the issue is not with the Alt.

Double check all your earth leads are good.

I now have the smurf in my hands, so iv since found, the plug on the new alternator is diff to the wiring loom plug, different colours.
Im now thinking that the wiring is different between the 2 plugs or something.

They are a PITA as the same model came with different Alternators. This happens right through the Hilux range. Its allways good to have your old one with you when buying a new one.
