Dipstick reading on a 100 series?

Post by sickgm »

Hey,

Once again as I am just getting to know my 100 series! Could someone please tell me how to get an accurate engine oil reading?

When I pull the dipstick, I get one side of it telling me that it is half full and the other side showing that there is too much oil in it ?

Other times i get broken sections of oil?

It is a 4.5lt petrol....

Sometimes its Hot and cold There maybe a Number stamped on both sides ?

If your getting Broken sections of oil on the stick Try wiping it and putting it back in and then check it again (ive had to do it a couple times sometimes)

You should check it when hot, Ignore the broken dribbly bit and read from the 'solid' oil. there shouldnt be much variation from one side to the other.
It will take about 1litre to top up from the 'Low' mark to the 'Full' mark, so if it is reading somewhere in between the two it wont be a problem.

I always wipe the dipstick and dip it back in a few times to be sure its reading the same each time

I dont' think it has to be hot. You can check it hot or cold, and either way it should be somewhere between the low and high mark. Sump oil isn't a precise measurement.

x2

If you ever pull a sump off and get a guage for where the dip stick sits in the sump/compared to where the oil is you'll soon understand it is not a precise measurment. Shouldn't matter wether it is hot or not also.
