hi. im looking at a 93 model defender with a 200 tdi with 400 000 k's on it. in good condition. what distance should i expect out of this engine. car is $6500.

I would also add Design, materials used and quality control duing manufacturing.

Certainly, some engines will need a rebuild regardless (such as the Rover V8.....).

But, the 200TDI is a fine modernish engine and can last indefinitely if taken care of.

Hard to tell, is it using oil? how much smoke is it blowing.

My 300tdi had 453,000KM before it overheated and died (mostly my own fault) At that stage is was using a fair bit of oil 300ml every 2 weeks. The car was extremely well serviced though had done a lot of work, more than most 4wds.

Apparently Salisbury diffs weigh more than Mogs and 200tdi's last forever

Not at all. I run one and the wear metal levels are as good as any modern diesel. I've seen a few apart and they show no wear to speak of.

200tdi's can go on and on if the previous owner was anal about servicing and maintenence, but when they go wrong they go wrong very expensively.

Check the Harmonic Balancer for play, get a record of when the timing belt was last changed, get an injector test if you can.
