80 Series, Barn Doors....
Question is,
Is the Standard models the only ones that came out with Barn Doors??
I really like Barn Door Style body.
ie. will i find a diesel/ turbo ( factory) with Barn Doors?.
Im getting to the point where i may just have to go for one with
Wagon style rear end.
ps. is there anywhere where i can see all the models produced?
Cheers

its not an easy task trying to find a really top knotch decent one ,
i'd love to ask the designers, "WHY THE F did they not do it for all models?
Please dont tell me it was probably, so they could be diff than Patrols.
..on another note, WHY THE F ( again ) are landcruisers more expensive in Victoria ( Bolivia), theyre priced generally b/w 2 - 5 k more than any other state~!!!!

I think some of the later 80 commercials have a tacho, but do correct me if im wrong
Yeah only the base model comes with the barns doors, and it doesnt have any luxuries, which for me, is a great thing. The only motors that come with base model is the 1hz diesel and the 4.5 petrol.
I got the 100 series base model with factory optioned cloth seats and vinal floors, couldnt be happier.

I had been toying with the idea of making a 1 whole rear gate out of fibreglass that lifted up like the top section for mine, instant cover from sun/rain, and no tailgate in the way with fold out table on the wheel carrier.
Barn doors do make it more limited to access the rear of the car though.

Thanks heaps guys for your responses,
i seriously was thinking i was going banannas.
I gotta admit, the doors on the barn system rear,
do feel bit flimsy like, compared to the wagon ones,
but the easy of axcess will suit me ideally, especially
when i got a wheel carrier on the ass end.
If only i could click my fingers and the 80, i want would appear in çlassifieds.
i havent been in the secondhand market for over 15 years,
ive forgotten how frustrating it can be !

OK, there seems to be a bit of confusion as to whats what in the world of 80 series.
The DX (base model) is a barn door diesel non turbo model. It was the pov pack with vinyl interior, no electics, no flares, fixed rear windows, no 3rd row seating, split rims, no tacho and even no bonnet struts. These were also a part time transfer with manual locking hubs and only available in a manual.
The RV or the Getaway was based on the GXL minus the central locking, electric mirrors, flares and had split rims. It had over under tailgate, slide rear windows, gas struts and 3rd row seating the same as the GXL. These models also had a constant 4x4 with CDL and were only in the 4.5 petty. I'm pretty sure these were only in manual too. (but not 100% on this)
The GXL had over under rear tailgate, slide rear windows, 3rd row seating, electric windows, central locking, flares, constant 4x4, steel one piece rims, electric mirrors and the obvious cloth interior. It was available in a 4.5 petty, N/A Diesel and a turbo diesel in the later models. It also had ABS later on...
There are a few more, like the Blue Marlin, the Winter and obviously the Sahara. These are all speced above the GXL.

80's on 33' km2 and bling wheels, 2" lift and a big wish list
I've never seen a DX 80 series with a tacho and I've seen plenty of them (even got a 97 model wreck in the back yard without one). Are you sure it wasn't fitted afterwards .. ie by another owner?Mid73 wrote:Sorry to correct you on the tacho as i have a pov and it has a tacho but like you said no power anything even the mirror are manual.Jeff80 wrote:OK, there seems to be a bit of confusion as to whats what in the world of 80 series.

Early DX models have tacho's, but the option pack in them changed with the dash upgrade circa 95 I believe. They then had no tacho. None of the standard models (vinyl interior) came with tacho's.
DX and Standard (poverty pack) have barn doors.
I have seen one supposed RV with barn doors but I suspect it was a DX or standard with RV stickers.
People often get the DX and Standard mixed up - easy to do, not much difference between them especially in the later ones (in fact eventually the DX and Standard became the same - it was only early on that they were slightly different option packs).
Back to the original question - you will not find a factory turbo diesel motor in a DX or Standard, UNLESS someone has transplanted one in. These only came out with the asthmatic old 1HZ naturally aspirated diesel.
Personally I went a standard because of the barn doors and have fitted an after market turbo to the 1HZ. I don't care for the electrics and fancy bits on the inside, though better seats would be nice.
