Power steering bleeding?

Trying to bleed the power steering,
Filled the reserviour up turned the wheels left to right a couple times, topped it up repeated. Then put the cap back on and started it up, steering wheel swings right and just starts bouncing on full lock? turn it off and turn the wheel slightly favouring the left and turn it back on and it starts bouncing left, i cant turn it at all? All the hoses were taken off, is it possible theyve been put on back to front?
what have i done wrong?

Were you replacing the fluid initially? If so there could be a massive airlock in the system. Otherwise something is farked in the steering box.

Sounds like the back of the orb valve isn't in the right spot.

Check the top of the power steering box it may have a bleed off valve.
If it does crack it open when the engine is running to dispell the air.
If you could give some more info on the vehicle you'll get more specific answers.

its in a d22 navara, zd30 but its a gu patrol power steering box, so the hoses were disconnected to fit it. cant see a bleed nipple, could i crack one of the line bolts to let the air out?

I had the same problem with the power steer on my zook when the hoses were the wrong way round on the powersteer box

When you are bleeding it by turning hard lock left then right then left etc, you should have the engine running (and, ideally, the front wheels off the ground).

As for why it's acting weird, dunno but I doubt it's to do with bleeding, as troopy94 suggests could the hoses have been swapped by mistake?

yeah possible they have been put on the wrong way, patrol one might be opposite to the nav one as the piping had bends in it and pretty much lined up.
The patrol manual said to turn the wheels left to right first while the engine was off?, front wheels are off the ground.
Ill swap the hoses over tomorrow.

its not gunna bleed without the pump running

Thats what i thought but was just doing what it said, left to right with the cap off and motor off, then left to right with the cap on and engine on.

i had trouble bleeding the power steering on my 80 series. was told too have the front wheels of the ground and turn the wheels from left to right by moving the tires. top up reseviour. and repeat. you should see air bubbles in the reseviour. now use the steering wheel to turn the wheeels left and right. keep topping up as needed and keep turning until no more air bubbles.

by turning the the steering at the tires it bleeds up quicker because if you look at the steering wheel how fast it turns compared to you turning it by yourself

I replaced the power steering hoses on the GQ and had a problem with identifying the correct hose to box connection. The local wrecker told me if I put the high pressure hose onto the low pressure side of the box the steering wheel will bounce around from side to side. Fortunately I identified the correct way and it was all sweet. Looks like you had it arse about.

Sounds pretty much like the hoses are back to front

Is there any way to turn them around or will the fittings need to be changed? I didn't really pay attention. I can look at my patrol where the hoses connect to..... But I'll be away in in hours time.

thanks guys, swapped the hoses over and its all workin fine now. nav ports must have been opposite to the patrol.
