So, January 4th, we decided to start working on a Mitsubishi L200 Rally Raid, Dakar configuration. The car was in the Dakar 2007, DNQ, then another 2 or 3 races with a Spanish team. The car costs new 100.000 euro, so, when I bought it for 50.000 I thought that it could be a good value for money. Unfortunately, it is the biggest mistake I ever made with competition cars… The car was so bad built and fabricated, that I had to sell the chassis for 20 euro, to a gypsy guy… And we had to reconsider the project. In the beginning we said we will do it as our ex-Dakar car, with rear live axle, Nissan, with wider front suspension, etc. But now we reconsider the entire project, we bought a new chassis, and the car will be:
- Semi-tubular space frame chassis – keeping the front part of the Mitsubishi chassis, then tubes;
- 2850 mm wheel base;
- 1996 mm wide, tire to tire;
- 1778 mm high;
- 3.2 DID Mitsubishi engine (from the old car), but with another turbo and engine management unit;
- 6 speed sequential gear box, no low range;
- Independent rear suspension Ralliart;
- 300 liters fuel deposit (the other thing from the old car…);
- Engine and gear box repositioned, middle of the chassis;
- Ohlins suspension for now, but we will change it for FRT or Donerre.

When we started dismounting we realized the big disaster… The engine was sitting on top of the front differential. The suspension structure was very bad, with really strange angles, etc…

We started working on the cockpit, as it should be… Also on the chassis, we cut out all original reinforcement, fixing points, etc.

And the main gear box cross member just arrived, from the laser cutting machine! We really like it how it is… ;-)). As a mention, the cross member itself (without the fixing staff, silent blocks, etc) has a number of 18 pieces. All together, the engine and gear box mounting system has 62 pieces…

The rear wheel assembly is factory Mitsu pajero, but with a different brake disc and brake pads. The wheel hub is reinforced, as the front ones, and is machined to accommodate a bigger ball joint.

We fabricated the engine and the t/case/g/box supports. The g/box ones are designed to accommodate both the manual and the sequential gear boxes. (FIA changed the 2010 regulations for T1, so we don’t know for how long we still use the sequential one…) The engine and the gear box are moved backwards as much as possible, in order to properly balance the weights, keeping the 6 degrees as in the Mitsu Pajero, etc.
BTW, the gear box crossmember is the best fabrication we did so far. ;-)

We almost finished the front space frame. Also, we are working on the main roll-cage, as we had to make it according with the new 2010 FIA T1 regulations.
