not worried bout track pics look cool just about rules for comp and vehicles if there are any extras that apply to buggies

good to see a comp like this coming together well done !!
Yeah, Brenden has a more complete draft of rules, I am sure he will post them up on the Scenic Rim web site or here when he is ready to.

What I will say is:-
Buggies will not have to have a winch.
Buggies will need to carry recovery equipment.
There will be a 2 man team and only these 2 people can be in the vehicle or spot, either can drive.

Phone is ringing.

We had a little comp on one section of the Aussie Rock Race track. Pics are up on page 3 here. http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/ftopic198664-0-asc-60.php

Remember you don't have to be able to drive the track, as long as you can get through with a winch.

Maybe in the next month I will start taking interested people through the whole track.

Also, there is a good chance we might be setting the date for the comp later in the year so I can make sure it is all organized properly. I am thinking September.

You didn't miss anything. It has only just happened and isn't concrete yet. I want the race to be a success and it still needs more organizing. I have been down there the past 2 afternoons walking through bush finding a better route for the track because I had a look at the steep part where Brenden had plans of taking the race and it is just too steep and dangerous. What I have planned but not in concrete will make it into a longer track with the same amount of rocks (heaps) but more normal track also.

Spectators will be able to drive to the other end of the park and will never need to cross the track.

In my travels I have found some more potentially awesome buggy tracks. This place is just full of rock gullies and step ups.

I expect that in about a months time I will start taking tours of the track.

Out of curiousity are you looking to make it a bit more capable 4x4 friendly. By that I mean not so much only the buggys will get around the rest will have to winch a fair bit so to speak. If that makes sense. Nothing against the buggys at all but there is only a select few that will race where as if it is a track that capable trucks/drivers will be able to make it round i think you may have more competitors. just mho. 8hrs is going to be a long time on any track,we cant wait.
only the first roll hurts, then its a ride..

This is actually where 90% of the competitors will come from for this event. This is the type rig I will be building for it and in my opinion the main event. I don't expect any buggies, a hand full of truggies and the rest will be 4WD's that have been modified enough to have good approach and departure angles.

There will be 2 classes,
1. Buggy/Truggy - anything goes and
2. 4WD modified - no chassis mods between and including spring perches (except for strengthening and link mounts.). (I might also limit this class to only allowing the same make of vehicle body to chassis however year models can be upgraded. If people have opinions on this I am all ears)

Thought the class idea had been canned? Also no offence but I dont see a Truggy nearly as capable as a buggy.

The idea of people running a different part of the track to make the regular winch guys happy has been canned. Everyone will run the same track.

There are no buggies racing. If I find that some do race then I will consider another class.

The track is finalized and have drawn on the map where the track goes. I will upload it in a few weeks time.

I think September will be best before it gets too hot. I have to check out what other comps are on on this month. Does anyone have a list? Help with this would be appreciated.

I will type up the finer points of the rules but since I will be making the decisions now I will change a couple of little things.

We will have just 1 break in the middle of the day of about an hour or hour and a half. Teams will leave the pits at lunch in the same time intervals as the came in for lunch so they don't lose their lead.

I plan to run the course clockwise for half the day and then anti-clockwise for the 2nd half. I plan to have a checkpoint at the waterfall drop off so no-one drives off the edge but this will have to be approved by the park owners before it becomes official.

Times will be written down by an official at each checkpoint instead of it being the responsibility of the Driver/Nav.

In a month or so I will start taking interested parties down to slowly drive the track. This will help those who are not sure if their vehicle is up to it.

Give me a couple of days and I will post up the rules.

i think you need to put some more thought into this.

I will be entering if my truck if it is finished in time. Here is my problem, I have a 92 2wd Hilux, ALL the spring mounts (leaf) have been moved and front ones added. the chassis has been cut short at the rear of the hangers, the chassis cross members have been cut out to allow a 3 inch drive line lift and flat bottom without a body lift and new cross members added. The original engine mounts have been removed from the chassis and new ones fitted for the engine conversion, shock towers have all been raised and mounting for ram assist steering and a different box have been fitted.

the engine, shock towers, steering and chassis cross members are all between the mounts which would mean i cant run the 4wd modified class and yet my truck looks pretty standard.

Nick, what about no coil overs and no air shocks unless vehicle was fitted with them from factory.

I reckon the date will be 11th of September. I still have to finish the paperwork for insurance but I don't foresee any problems. (Previously Brenden was organizing insurance)

im not really sure shane.

ill throw this out there and see what people think....

4x4 modified must be standard design suspension and can be modified in any way as long as it retains the original design. eg Gq must have coils but you could run a 5 link and longer arms. once you fit coil overs it is a truggy.

I havent really thought about it, but this would be a simple way to seperate the 2 classes but keep the vechicles competitive in their class.
I personally dont care, i just dont want to be competiting against one other person cause we are the only 2 in the class.

For Mod class, no coil overs (except for stock design), no air shocks, must have most of the chassis rails and must have a cab. ????
Can change from Leaf to coil or coil to air bag, can have hydraulics similar to DGR vehicle, can lengthen and shorten wheelbase and cut chassis front and rear. Can have hydro steer, does not need rego. Can modify chassis somewhat but keep the width between the rails the same as stock.
No tyre chains or agricultural tyres. Must have winch and navigator.

After reading a lot of this I am curious....

(I am not even on your side of the pond but still am curious)

Why 2 classes? I understand in Oz the buggy thing is not big. Hell man I don't think watching buggies crawl in ultra low is real exciting all the time.

Take your TTC...people build their trucks for this race. They spend all year doing it for one race, or maybe a few other races. Or take our KoH...same thing pretty much only a bit more serious. If you develop this as an OZ KoH people will build trucks to suit it. Don't expect 40 trucks 1st go and really maybe that is 2x to many....20 seems real good to me. Make it anything goes but have a minimum tire size say and a few other things. Obviously don't have a Zook on 32s competing against a $100k buggy but also don't make to many standards or rules as to what kind of truck can run it and what can't. The first year will show what shouldn't be on the course, what should and what will win. This will bring new ideas to building and new trucks will show up next year for the event and so on and so on. You can't please everybody so don't try.

Also if you want to see a good successful event look at our USA TTC. Trucks get voted on by us the fans. The most votes gets you in the race. This is a success because it includes us the fans. Why not try something like that for this? It could work out great, especially for the first go where you are figuring it all out in temrs of the event, course and types of truck to race it.

The prize money while important should not fuel this and niether should things like big brand names. That will all come in time....the key to success in any event is excitement for the crowd. Techincal rock crawling is great fun but has fallen from popularity because it just isn't all that much fun to watch a guy on one rock for 30 minutes. Rock racing is exciting and that is why it is a booming sport.

I think you are trying to go way to big way to fast. This is your first event, go small, take it easy as far as rules and planning and all that stuff. Listen to your guys who have experience, I see lots of them posting in this thread. Not that you are not listening but I think maybe just drop it all down a few notches to say the least.

Also all the posting by the guys organizing this is great and all but you have taken a bit of the magic out of the event. Don't show everybody the course before hand, don't let people run it as much as they like before the event...that is just dumb for obvious reasons. Mystery, suprise, equal ground for all is what will make this exciting...if it is exciting people will come or buy the DVD or whatever and it will grow, perhaps fast.

Seems like there is a worry that trucks will break or get badly stuck and hold up the group. The whole course shouldn't have more than one or maybe two bottle necks where this could happen. Yes it is bad if a truck is holding up the whole event on one obsticle but come on don't you realize this can very well be a highlight of an event as much as a bummer too? Just look at this years KoH to see what I mean. Guys driving over the other vehiles to get around or giving each other a push ect ect ect. This is exciting to the crowd and a bottle neck is where a ton of the spectators will be to watch the hardest obsticle. At this point if you are worried have good recovery set up to get a truck off the track fast and get people moving again. Or let the chaos fly! Whichever is more exciting I guess....

You have got an awesome looking park and terrain. Don't try to make a do-it-all event though with mutiple classes. Hold a winch event at the park at a different time on a different course. Have a buggy specific race if that is the aim. If it is more along the lines of rock racing then make it so...don't try to combine them all or it will just get way to messy. Look at what makes a certain event popular and what makes it succeed. Don't try to re-invent the wheel.

Like I say awesome looking park to hold an event....baddass builders in Oz with sick trucks. Take it easy first time though and it will come together. Keep rules short and simple too. The potential is there big time...even for an international event.

BTW, maybe I am wrong but the organizers seem to lack a lot of experience doing this. I say listen to the guys who build the trucks and race them. Have a pow wow with them....say 10 invites to the best trucks and builders in Oz to come down and help you get this off the ground. Make it the OZZY version of the KoH meaning invites only. And I don't mean invites only who come lay out the track and run it a bunch and then on race day show everybody else up. I mean invites only to the guys who can help you get this off the ground and are willing to do that. Good people with experience will make this happen and boom Oz has its KoH. A few guys holding all the cards with no poker face and a guy or two making all the rules is no good. To many people are not going to like it and it may fail quick.

I think the let the guy who runs it first name it sounded like a kick ass idea. This kind of thing brings people to you be it in exposure, respect or just pure good ole fun to be the one who drives it and names the track. Hell I bet you would get people driving thousands of Ks just do that at your park.

That is my 2 cents from over here....

Thanks for the feedback.

I will postpone this event until next year now. I am sorry for those who have their vehicles ready to go and the guys who won't be ready in time will thank me.

Volunteer. If someone has experience with filling out insurance forms for speed vehicle competitions and would love to help organize this event, I need your help. I have the insurance company lined up which is probably the hardest task sorted.

I will comment on your observations.

2 Classes because there are not many Buggy/Truggy vehicles in Australia willing to go hard all day. It is still something I can consider though and it may well be a good idea to run just 1 open class. It may not be a Buggy that will win this event.

I agree about the prize money. I actually don't need a sponsor to run this event and won't push it, at least for the first race. Insurance, safety and renting the Park for a day does cost a fair bit so it would be great to have a few competitors and a crowd at the first race.

I am personally not concerned about vehicles getting stuck because of what you say about the crowd and recovery vehicles.

Some of these tracks really are awesome and there are still more to be opened up.

You are right about the lack of experience. This will slow me down hence the postponement of the event but I am sure we can have a professionally run event the first time. I just need to get the right help.

We have had a fair few guys run some of the harder parts of the track and we have had awesome feedback so I am happy that the track is right.

We are going to run a stage type speed event at the same time as Scenic Rim is organizing their speed events in June. It will be interesting how people go trying to drive it fast.

I have opened this event up too much for discussion on a forum. Next time I will organize it more off the forum. I don't have editing rights and I cannot control it when it gets messy when people who have no intention of racing take over with their tangent opinions.

Thanks for your 2c. I have taken it all on board.

That is a different event run by Scenic Rim Adventure Park. It is mainly focused on speed in stages and in different classes.

However, Suspension Stuff is also involved in this. More will be revealed very soon by Brenden in that thread about that event which I am excited about. I will say that if you are interested in the rock race, it would be great practice to get along to the King of the Rim in July.

Depending on when next year , I'll be up for it.. either as a competitor or a recovery vehicle. my 80 series ute is set up as a Dedicated comp recovery vehicle, but is still more than capable in it's own right.

If the Hilux is ready, then I'd like to race it. this is exactly the sort of event it's designed and built for. hard core Sh!t!!

By then I hope to have at least Toperi and Willowglen under my belt as a competitor.

Black Bull Racing ;)

Also PM me if there's anything I can help out with from down here.
