Hey,
Im looking to buy a suzuki as a weekend fun machine, mainly beach but some muddy forrestery trails, not much rock hopping. I have about $10,000 to spend and a Jimny '98 with 90,000kms is for sale for $9,000 would this be better or should I get a sierra? I want to fit 215/75 BFG muddies but not sure if they go straight on a Jimny..any advice?

if ya wanna modify it at all, go the sierra... everyone's got em or has worked on em, and parts n stuff are readily available. if u've got $10K you could buy a sierra for round $3k and spend the rest on mods!!!!! you would have an awesome beast then

I second what Stumped has written... 10k buys one hell-uva sierra - but won't get you very far with a Jimny...
Check out Big Steve's buildup thread - i'm pretty sure he is working on a budget of less than 10k and is prepping up a real little monster

I'm a Jimny owner, but I would go with the Sierra with that amount to spend.
215's won't fit straight under a Jimny without serious guard scrubbing, you would need a 2" suspension lift to do it.
You would also need to fit bullbar/towbar or get some recovery points made up as the Jimnys dont have any (never use the tie down points - they tear off and are quite lethal)
As the guys said, you could get a really fantastic late model Sierra for $10k!

2 of my mates have em and there's plenty of shite available for em too
Both have 4" lift (one 4" spring, one 2" spring + 2" body), Winchbars, 30" muddies (soon to be 31's on the one with some guard chopping) and are getting airlockers

It all comes down to that cause past the mods mentioned above it starts to get tricky whereas all the knowledge and experience is already there with a sierra Trails don't have to be all that light though

I would go the Jimny IF you can limit yourself to beach and light trails...

I wouldn't touch a Jimny that was under $12k ....have seen a few cheap and nasties getting around Sydney that are death traps from accident repairs.
Mods are now becoming readily available, mine now runs a series 3 rockhopper, 4" suspension etc........... and body lift plus 32/3's (depending on the talent of a panel beater) will be done when time allows. Theres snorkels, suspension and body lift options as well as bars, winches, extractors etc etc.
But.....more costly than Sierra bits. Whilst I love Jimnys, for the amount of money you have, you can't go wrong with a Sierra, they are brilliant.
