diff lock compatability

diff lock compatability
G'day I'm a newbie here and to 4wding, anyway, longstory short, I've recently bought a repairable writeoff MK triton auto v6 that I'm fixing up.
Anyway at work we just got a 91 pajero turbo diesel manual with factory diff lock, so first off I know coils vs leafs, but I guess it'd be possible to modify, to take leafs and setup for disks all round(Yeah I know it'd have to be engineered), but if i went that way will it be the same width,
Secondly if I decide against that will the centre be interchangeable?
Lastly does anybody know if the ratio's will be different?
Also has anybody done this or similiar.
Much apreciate any help.
Cheers
Joel H.

Hi Joel - welcome to the forum.
Frank (Bitsamissin) is the guru with this stuff, but I'll take a guess.
The 91 turbo diesel is probably the 9" rear diff, and I would expect the triton to have the same size diff - so I would say that's a good start.
Ratios are less likely to be the same (I expect the petrol auto would have a numerically lower ratio than the 2.5 turbo diesel), but the centres would probably interchange. A good "quick & dirty" check would be check the ARB Air Locker part numbers for both models. If they both take the same air locker then centres are interchangeable.

G'day cheers for that, I had a look at the arb site, and it's throwing an odball at me.
link
it has the same part number for that age, but it says, it wont fit intercooled turbo diesls or 3.5L V6's and yes it's a turbo diesel but it doesn't offer a substitute, on what it does use.
Has the comment about using a larger crown wheel etc.

I don't know for sure, but I think that's because there's some overlap in '93 to '95. Some NJs had the 3.0 V6 with the 9" diff, but all the turbo diesels and the 3.5V have the 9.5" rear diff - I expect that's what the note means.OZBMX wrote:G'day cheers for that, I had a look at the arb site, and it's throwing an odball at me.

The 91 turbo diesel should be the 2.5 with a 9" diff, and accept the RD46. However, I note the Triton listing indicates the 9.5" was introduced in 2002 - was that MK? Or is that when Mitsubishi introduced the 2.8td to the Triton?
Try the measurements?
count the bolts holing the centre into the housing. will either be 10 bolt or 12 bolt. if its 10 bolt(the triton), it SHOULD be the same. 2.5dt and 3.0v6 pajs are 10 bolt, 3.5 and 2.8dt pajs are 12 bolt.
ratios.. if its a jtop paj with diff lock, chances are it will be the 5.29 ratio. if its hard top, then it hay be 4.8 or 5.29. look on the back of the rear diff housing, by the oil filler, and it should have a little sticker that will tell you the ratio. if its a jap import the ratio will also be on the chassis plate in the engine bay as the transaxle code. but they remove the decimal point so 4.875 reads as 4875 (i think thats how it goes anyway). if you do have differant ratios, you may still be able to put the front diff from the paj into the triton also. i have a funny feeling, your triton will be about 4.6. but thats just a sneeking suspsion.
good luck, Sam

Yep to save yourself potential heartache after pulling everything apart and discovering things don't fit I'd do a little bit of checking :-
- look at the data plate of the Paj it will tell you what diff ratio it has (this alloy plate is usually found on the firewall) my guess is it will be 5.29's if it was an Oz model.
If it is a 5.29 then it will be different to the Triton which most likely will have 4.875 (MK V6 auto) - check the data plate on the Triton to 100% check what ratio it has as well.
- if you are still interested all is not lost as the 4.875 C&P should be able to be fitted to the Paj locker centre but if you get the Triton VIN no and ring your local Mitsi dealer to get the rear C&P part no I can tell you for sure.
- if the above pans out you have two options swap the 5.29 with the 4.875 C&P and put the centre with axles into the Triton diff housing or swap the whole rear Paj housing into the Triton with 4.875 ratio and gain the disc brakes. Remember there are no guarantees that the Paj locking centre and axles will fit into the Triton housing if you elect to do this so that option will be suck and see.
Also remember that the diff lock axles are different lengths (the lsd axles are the same length either side) so if you break one they are very hard to find and new from Mitsu your looking at $700+.
Paj Gen 2 LSD axles can still be found at wreckers quite easily and usually cost $150-200 per axle.

I just luv my "clacker Jabber"
much appreciate that, yeah, It's definately not something you want to pull apart blindly.
I had a look at the plate on the pajero today at work and took a photo of the plate on the bonnet, and it's 5285 so 5.29 I guess.
and yeah 4.875 on the triton
It's funny neither have the stickers as that what I alway check for normally
But the pajero has been welded up like the diff housings been damaged.
well I guess both are posibilties but will require a diff specialist, will have to price one up, also will have to talk to an engineer encase of going discs in the ass end.
By the way does anybody have an idea on what it's worth paying for it, like I work there so hope I'll get cut a bit of a deal, but not sure what there worth e.g. they said 350, complete diff.
