Gearbox choice for tb48

Post by AFeral »

Recently bought a tb 48 with a 5 speed auto gearbox for my patrol Gq wagon. I was told that the 5 speed could be beefed up to handle plenty of abuse. I was told wrong :bad-words: . Kewish auto's can build the 5 speed auto, but to be onnest its not the best option as once built is good for 240 rwkw compared to 440rwkw for the auto 4 speed. So bang for your buck 4 speed auto is the way to go. Lot of bucks it is though $6000 for a beefed up, manualised box.
I have not got $6000  So what the bloody hell do i do now. Looks like selling the 5 speed auto is the go and buying ?? Either a gq 5 speed manual or a gu 4 speed auto. I like the idea of the gq manual as it has the potential to run a pto. Could be handy for further planned mods. Like the idea of the auto drove one rencently and liked it. At a later stage i can get it built into a stronger gearbox by kewish.
How hard is it too fit the gu 4 speed auto, does it bolt stait up or do I need to change the bell house, if so which bell housing will bolt to my tb 48. Which torque converter would be best to run too.
With the gq manual box will these bolt up to the tb 48 or is a change of bell house required too.
Know a rattled on a bit felt it was best to give as much info as possible to get a the answer i'm after. Ideally I would like to run an auto just got to work out if I can afford this option.
Anything is possible, it just comes down to time and money.

Bogged bought my GU TB45 Auto after the turbo fried it and had it rebuilt. I believe he still has it, and it's for sale, as he went back to manual after problems in installing it to his TD42T.

Sure you've been told the right information? I was under the impression the GU 5spd was designed to fit behind this engine:

Note the highest powered version it is bolted to, the VK56VD with 310kW.

Yes the gearbox i have is desinged to bolt onto the tb48 engine. Acccording to kewish and a few other people I have spoken too the 5 speed auto is not that strong. I could manualise it and put it in. If it does not hold up i'm left with a buggered 5 speed auto worth very little if anything. So probally better to sell it now and put the money into something stronger that will take some punishment. Just working out all my options.

Think L O N G and hard about who you use to build it. There is an excellent gearbox builder in Bayswater - Wholesale Automatics. None better. Rodney is the man to talk to...

Some people tell you all sorts of shit, like what you can and cant use, what will and wont bolt up, until it comes to doing it, then 'oh we never said that' kinds drivel... even when you have asked 5-6 times and been told yes its all good. tell you it will be done in a 2 weeks only to take 8mths...

Rodney will not just say it, he will make it happen and back it up.

No my point is that the figure you have given of 240RWkW doesn't really align with the output of the motors attached to the gearbox. Which is why I am questioning if this transmission shop is being dicky with you.

So what your trying to say is, other engines with a more power are fed through this gearbox. Am I correct ? Good point. How well is the gearbox holding up behind these engines. Had a look at some titan gearboxs on ebay, they look different to the one i have in my shed. Are they the same internally ?

USA will be where you will find the information you need. Over there they have VK motors from 4.5L to 5.6L making anywhere from 200kw to 410kw. Could very well be 2 different 5spd autos around for these V8s.

We're going to have better luck if you can tell us what the transaxle code of your gearbox is.

The Titan uses the RE5R05A and the Patrol 4spd is a RE4R03A. Seems the patrol 5spd is also the RE5R05A.

I'd be getting other opinions before you scrap the idea.

There's alot of information out there about it just googling.

tech info apparently : http://www.clubtitan.org/forums/showthread.php?t=30192

Thanks for the links Yom. The gearbox shown on the titan forum looks just like mine. Unlike the one I found on ebay. So unless the 4 speed looks the same, I think it safe to say I have a RE5R05A.
