how is it a stupid question ?PBBIZ2 wrote:My 2.8TD GQ has a separate vac pump on the engine, not piggy backed on the aternator. Stupid question I suppose since you said you have the wreck, but are you sure the alt with c pump is from the 2.8GQ TD?

i have a gq 4.2L diesel the alt is on its way out it has a vac pump on the alt.

Some of the early 2.8TD's (i think the early 95 ones, the very first released ones) had Vac pump on the back of the Alt (according to the Gregories book they did).
These ones can be used with a 4.2L Diesel since they have vac on back.
The later GQ and all of the GU 2.8's had the Vac pump moved on top of the rocker cover and ran off a lobe on the overhead cam.

i am prolly getting the 4.2 one rebuilt by a bloke off the patrol forum. but just for future knowledge are they a direct bolt in swap. when i had a quick look i notice the one in the 2.8 was upsiide down compared to the 4.2.

Aaron,
I was not saying your question was the stupid one, more perhaps mine since I didn't think Nissan would do a change like that on the same motor, hence the question as to whether it was really an original vac pump alternator or maybe off another vehicle.
Anyway, I have learnt something new tonight about this series.
Regards
Phil

TD42 from 88 to mid 94 had Vac pump on back of alt
late 95 all the way thru the gu rang Nissan relocated the Vac pump on the TD42 to the timing case below the Injector pump which requires a whole new front and rear timing case

RD28T from early 95 to about late 95 or early 97 had the Vac pump on alt and the re-did the rocker cover and cam shaft on the later RD28T to have a lifter on it that runs a vac pump above the no.5 cylinder
