80 or 60 diff for coil conversion

Post by horndog »

I'm struggling to decided which diff to use in my coil conversion, i want width that the 80 will offer but the strength and cost of 60 is pulling me towards them.

Its going in a hzj75 series with most likely a 5 link front and a double triangulated 4 link in the rear. Any advice would be great and anyone know the width of the 60 compared to the 80?

I think the offset of the 60 diff makes a 3 link difficult, you
may have similar problems with the 5 link.

5 link would be fine, plenty of blokes run them in 4 Runners and Surfs.
3 link it would be a bit more difficult, but not by much.

The front output shaft from the transfer would probably be a bit of a deciding factor too, should be no dramas on th rear though to have an unusual offset diff.

I think the width of the 80 series would be a big plus, but as you say 2 x good 60 series can be had for as little as $400.

maybe you can go a coil front end out of a 79 series so it dont stick out to far for legal road use and use a 105 series rear diff

yeah the width is the only thing leaning me to 80s, found out that they are 3 inches in total narrower than the 80 so was thinking of running 1 or 1.5 inch wheel spacers to make the difference, yeah the drive shaft and diff centre is the only real major concern with the front, i guess i can always just get the diff lined it up and see if it will work.

it will just be a weekend play too and local comps so wont see the road much, didn't want the hi pinion diff centre as i have already done the original diff centre and didn't want to keep doing them in the future.

Found a few 60 diffs with centres for $400 so going to have a look at them.

So my new question has anyone put a 60 diff under a 75 and how they went about matting the drive shaft to it as i assume that the flange on the 60 diff will be larger compared to my large on the hi pinion

as well is running 1 or 1.5 inch spacer really that bad and how much extra strain will it put on the nears, it wont be doing many k's so Im hoping i would have any major issues

cheers guys for all the input, i have decided to go 60's for the strength and price and are picking up a set this afternoon, i will definitely look into adding a bit more width to them down the track.

the strength of the 80 can be fixed with aftermarket gears and a locker
the 60 series has much smaller and weaker cv's than the 80
so go the 80

set of 30 spline longfields solves the CV issue.

I didnt realise that about the cvs thrashlux but was going to run long feilds anyway no matter what diff, i picked up the 60 diffs today and started stripping off the old mounts so i guess ill give the 60s a go. thanks for the input, if i had alot more money i would go 60 centre with 80 wings welded to them to have the best of both worlds, least doing 60s now i already have the centre and the locker if i decide to do this down the track.

Cheers
