sorry for the hi jack but while on this subject
but where do you drill and tap the steering box for hydro asist
thanks jono

i dont know yet but have easy acsess to 75 series cruser and ifs lux boxes
its going into a licerish alsort scat whith my old cruser diffs
so im open to any common steer box
and thanks for the link 'ill read it in the morning when im not so tyred

You would only need a big resivoir if the single ended ram was spring return his diagrame shows it being a 2 port ram so driven both ways same amount of fluid just gose from one side of the piston to the other
so dunc does this mean i just raid your brain of endless knolwage after your trip
thanks jono

What about the volume taken up by the shaft itself. When the ram is fully extended, the cylinder volume is all fluid, but when fully (or part)contracted, it has the rod within the cylinder, so the amount of fluid required is lesser by by the volume of the rod. Some sort of reservoir would be required I would think.. (this refers to a single ended ram as shown in the diagram)
in the diagram its a presure return single ram so it wond fill up like you think

Eg. Need's 1.5L of fluid when out but only .5L when in.
the cooler im running is a heat sink style which will add extra to the system, but if still not enough ill put another res in. the pump itself has a small one on it.

So is this the same for 80 series box and pumps?? I need to do this mod so I can steer it in creek runs.

Just remember it will be easier to turn one way than the other as the shaft takes up some of the surface area of the piston and the force is lost as a result.

x2 with willy hilux. The anulus area(basically piston diameter minus shaft diameter) will have an effect on your steering between left and right due to greater volume of oil on piston end for extension of the ram.You should be right running the cooler also but a general rule is for the resevoir to have about 3 times more than you can pump(lpm)?
i have never driven a hydro assist car so can you blokes that have share how much you really notice the difference one way to the other if you really do at all??
sierra truggy,37 sticky treps,propane,6.5s and disconnect,lux diffs with spools,16" fox shox,hydro steer.
Just hook it up. My lux didn't need a bigger res untill i really modded the fluid speed and pressure....
Don't really notice a difference in left vs right.
You will need more fluid speed, as a minimum, otherwise the steering will lock at speed when you really don't want it to. Which could be BAD.

what do you mean by this locking at speed??sorry for the hijack just interested in whats happening? just that you need more flow(hi flow pump)?

It won't lock solid, but going full lock to full lock in a hurry you will have to wait for the ram to catch up as a ram uses a lot more fluid than a psteer box needs, but it has to flow through the box. hard to explain really.
yeah na thats cool i just was tryin to work out wat was ment just interesting for me
u are saying that as the fluid is say pushed through extension end of cylender at piston end the oil in other end of barrel must be pushed out through retraction port of cylender and back through the box which is where it can become trapped if to quick???? whereas in a normal hydraulic circuit would go back through the valve and to tank

It's not actually the volume of oil, it's the surface area of the piston it has to work on that governs the "strength" of the ram. As you say, there will be a difference in each direction with this set up.
