Here is a bit of an update on where im at with my head leak.
Pulled the head off and the gasket is fine, but looks as though it has not sealed in some places. I am blaming the halomar spray i just as to why it has not sealed. Also have found cracks in the Pre-comp chambers.
See

Ok as far as updates go, i havnt done anything for the past few weeks ran out of $$, however should be getting back into it tomorrow.
To my knowledge the block was decked then the liners were installed, the liners arnt flush with the block as when i was cleaning the block up with my razar blade scraper you can catch the blade on all the liners. The head gasket was not genuine and the bolts were not over torqued.
This time, i have just had the head re-vamped and new pre-comp chambers installed(pick it up in the morning) I am using a Genuine head gasket. Also i will be putting it all together dry, I am also re-tapping all the block threads and blown them out before i start. I am also thinking about putting thin High tensile washers on under the head bolts to stop them from binding up on the head casting. I am also going to over tourque all the head bolts 10-15% and yes i have got new head bolts as well.
If anyone thinks i need to know anything else let us know
Cheers Ash

Well, Job Done! Been a long day, thanks to Tom(Z()latan) for coming round to give us a hand in the Arvo. We just took it for a test drive and it is going like a rocket again. Its got a bit of a weird turbo noise though, sounds like a supercharger but i think its more than likely a hose not sealed or the intake manifold might not have sealed properly. the Boost controller is playing up again as it is boosting well over 30PSI so cant put the foot right into it, got to keep backing off. I Think Z()latan was imprest at the pick up it has when your sitting at 100km on the highway and you put your foot into it. we even turned the gas on and gave it a bash, bloody hell talk about boost response, 0 to off the gauge 30PSI+++ almost instantly. Major down side to all this is the fuel usage, we just did 35km, when i left home it had a full tank of fuel and the gauge was reading past the full mark, when we got home from our test drive the gauge was half way in the first quarter. im going to drive it for a couple of weeks to see how it all goes then will look at getting it tuned to suite more economy hahaha. Will put some pics up tomorrow night.
gudday ash
you ever get that thing on the dyno?
Looking for a GU at the mo as I am about to do another truck for myself and scratching around for info for the build, would you change anything if you did it again? you ok with the slight lag with the GT3071? was thinking of dropping down to a 60-65 comp wheel to even it out a bit as it comes on a bit strong.

GQ with 30 PSI of TD42T.........
Bloke at ARB sth had 20psi on his 280k klms GQ Few years back...RIZZO wrote:have an 89 old gq 4.2 diesel, with a switzner ball bearing turbo , how much boost can these rigs handle everyday??? truck never misses a beat, runs beautiful but has nearly 400000k ??
depends on how long you want it to last.
12-14psi is normally quite safe.
it will all come down to how well its been looked after with those sort of kms on it.RIZZO wrote:have an 89 old gq 4.2 diesel, with a switzner ball bearing turbo , how much boost can these rigs handle everyday??? truck never misses a beat, runs beautiful but has nearly 400000k ??
on the old motors like yours the old school guys used to start tuning at 20 psi...
mines a 97, weakest of the weak they reckon, and has been running 13 psi with gas for probably 20K now without an issue, when alot of people say run 8, 10 max, i did that for a while, got the shits with it still be slow, so more boost and fuel and its getting there now.
just depends if your prepared to deal with the consequences?
97 GQ patrol coilcab. TD42, safari turbo kit with fiddled turbo, D-GAS kit. dyno results to come...
4inch lift, king springs, efs and procomp shocks

Hi Garth it been a while, since ive been on here. I havnt had it dyno's as i have still been having problems with burning oil. obously i didnt want to strip the engine down and pull the rings out straight away so i have been changing everything i could think of and slowly crossing off possible causes. Sadly i have actually Today pull the GU into the garage and started stripping the engine down, to do a in chassis re-ring. I think i have just been Very unlucky and the oil ring has given out already.garth wrote:gudday ash

As far as would i change anything? Well yes i would.............. I would probably use the GT2876R instead of the GT3071R as the power band is a little late however it would be very good for racing.
Secondly unless i had a really good reason to have a diesel. for the same amount of money i could have built a turbo charged 4.8L petrol and have 1000Hp and not 250HP.
I have decided once i have re-ringed this engine and got it all sorted out i will be putting into my Competition Nissan patrol Ute anyway, As you are unable to really use all the benefits of this engine due to a "legal road tune" i.e not much black smoke. To see my comp ute check out

G'Day mate, incase you haven't try this already; I noticed in one of your pics that your crank case ventilation is plumed in pre turbo, does it have a catch can between tappet cover and inlet pipe? If so you need to vent the catch can to atmosphere when running high boost as it builds up vacum and will draw oil out of the crank case and burn it. Or you could just try venting it straigh to atmosphere.
Yeh, mate i do have a catch can now, i have also tryed disconnecting everything and running to atmosphere.
There are two things it could be, both are VERY annoying since both were New when i built the engine. and also Both require at least the head to come off.
The valve stem seals could be leaking a bit, as it blows a lot more smoke after it has been sitting.
Or/AND the oil rigs have gone.
Iv sort of lost all inspiration with this engine now it really is giving me the shits! so i will pull the rings out and re-send the head off, i don't want to have to do this again for another 400,000+++++KM's
cheers Ash

gudday smash
sorry to hear there's still a drama, I'm sure you'll crack it though.
From what I remember you had the pistons coated? I have seen rings 'stick' in the 'lands' of the pistons when it has been incorrectly applied (too thick) and that would give the exact symptoms of oil use, and crank case pressurisation that you have, or maybe a ring inverted?.
If the head was new when engine was assembled it shouldn't be worn valve seats so save yourself some cash and check those rings...thats where my money is anyway.
I'm currently reassembling the I/C, extractors and Turbo assembly, etc after blowing the exhausts manifold seals while thrashing it towing over xmas, I have to rip heaps of gear of to get at em so I know what its like to do shit again.
For my next engine I'm lookin at using a ARE W/A intercooler and plenum like in Heaths old motor and a GT3065R hybrid Garrett top mounted. I have had a good run with the 3071 but will try something else for this build. Aiming on getting even more power that out of this one now but still using the same spec head,Injection/P but with a custom cam.
You are right about the cash factor of building these things! no change from 25k! you will have a mean 4.8 for that.....
Good luck with project
Hey if it was easy....chicks would be building these things!
ps: just check ya web page - thats a sweet ute mate! heres mine just finished it for my work wagon

GQ with 30 PSI of TD42T.........
Did you ever increase the crank case breather from standard 8mm to 25mm like I did?
With boost at 30psi there was no way the crank case was going to breath other wise - especially with rings that are yet to fully 'bed in'.
(oil was being forced into turbo compressor then into combustion chambers)
It solved my oil burning problem and now the engine has done 12000km there is virtually nil blow by at idle.

When you re ring, would it help to run it in a little differently?
GQ with 30 PSI of TD42T.........
Nar no damage, but was very very lucky as the whole ring grove had snapped off but it had still held together on the piston. if any of it had of come loose it would have been all over for that bore. looks like mabey a little grit has gone through the bearings so will be replacing them as well. all the journals are still fine.bogged wrote:Any damage to the bore?smash250 wrote:Well i finally have found the answer to all my problems!
Pulled the pistons out today and number 3 piston has broken a ring grove off which hold the oil ring.
