they are very powerful there is a guy in brisbane with one in a nissan patrol that does a 12 second sec 400m run we are talking 1000hp and crazy amounts of torque
best thing is it gets around 12ltr per 100 in his patrol
i am changing jobs soon (shifting islands) moving to vanuatu this will give me more time in aus to build trucks one of the first projects will be a duramax into an 80 should be fun
the downside yes there is one and its $ i am expecting to spend 30 g on the conversion but i will go to the us and buy all the crap myself to save some cash put it in a box and send it over
it wont be as cheap as an ls1 read 2x the cost but would make a better tourer or tow rig
may start a thread once i kick off with the build

I have done a best of 10.2 ltr/100 with 33" tyres and is yet to be tuned. The Duramax sounds like a very interesting conversion, I will be very keen to see a build thread of this but I will take a lot of convincing to believe it will be "better" for touring than the newer Gen 4 engines. How does the Holden Auto connect to the transfer case? The Engine, loom, tuning etc isnt an issue for me and ill get killalux to do the mounts etc but unsure how to fit up the gearbox side of things.crankycruiser wrote:mine now owes me less than 7k including engine.. i managed to pick a HSV clubby motor, auto box, complete front sub frame with brakes, steering rack, and full exhaust including cats for 2.3k..
i have sold most of the stuff i didnt need it now owes me less than 1k for the motor.
If anyone is interested in doing the swap in Brisbane i have a hoist, tools etc but doing it all myself is the challenge. If we were to do 2 cars and pool resources it would work out easier

The gen 4 engines (6.0 & 6.2ltr) have a lot more torque than the gen 3 engines. A lot dearer, and availability is much less than an LS1, which is easy to find second hand. Now driving FZJ-80 GXL 6.2 LS3 powered.
Heaps of power mate. Im a chippy aswell with similar set up. I used to tow it with my 4.5 cruiser ute (exhaust, extractors aswell) Youd be shocked at the amount of power and torque the ls1 makes. 3rd gear used to pull like a train and shocked ALOT of people. But even towing when sitting at 100kph it didnt drink much. Its all in the stop, start where it drinks a bit.
Ive settled with a slow turbo diesel 80 series now (weekend toy). But i would highly recommend going the LS1 behind either the manual or auto. Smooth, silent and powerful. Mine was 1 of the first ever done and I was running an after market comp. But killalux knows his stuff and a commodore comp is pretty good.

What did you change on your airbox? I'm going to be making a new one as the 1hz's old outlet is only about 2.5inch and is a serious choke point in the system. Is yours still a cruiser box or did you use a pod filter?Was getting similar till I modded airbox and changed filter to a KN made a uge difference.

4L60 adapter to transfer is available from marks. If towing i would consider the 4l80, or atleast upgrade the 4l60 to be a little more reliable.

Power wont be an issue. I know the LS1's well and have a 408 cube stroker with a 2.8L twinscrew supercharger in a GTO Monaro (870hp) and have a spare supercharger for to go in the cruiser too. A good mate in Sydney builds my auto's so thats not an issue. Ive started to get parts together for the mods.

I cut off the 75mm intake and cut out a square hole about 25% of the airbox then made a transition or square to round intake is now 102mm on the original airbox and used 102 on the lid, took a bit of stuffing around as I wanted to be able to use the wing nut as well to help with sealing. Am currently making a stainless 102mm snorkel so I will have 102mm all the way to Maf.
