what to do with the lux?

Post by brettski »

i bought a 95 model dual cab hilux about a year ago and the old 2.8d motor is just about dead, burns and leakes lots of oil and blows lots of smoke. just trying to decide if its worth spending the cash on it to get her going well. i was thinking about a second hand 3l motor but they seem to go for around the 2000 mark, but i cant see the point in that since a fully rebuilt motor costs about 3000. if i add a turbo kit to that and cost of installation i can see it all costing about 5-6k. cash is tight these days so im not really sure what to do. is there any other cheaper options? i was thinking about selling it as is, but i doubt id get much for it, plus ill probably end up buying anothrer peice of sh*t! any help/advice appreciated

its the only option other than selling it. as any motor swap will cost more and second hand is an unknown. 3-4k seems about the price for the 3L rebuild.

cheers for the reply, after doing some research it looks like the 3rz could be a resonably cheap option/upgrade!? how does the 3rz compare against a 2.8TD power wise? im not chasing alot of power, just enough to get load up the hilux and take it on the beach. if i can find a 3rz for around 2000 and get some mates to help me install it, could be the way to go i think....

I have seen rebuild kits on EBAY for $950. If you have a mate or family member who is a mechanic can make for a cheap rebuild

drive it into the ground, and keep an eye out for a lux wreck on pickles.com.au in Belmont or revsby....buy a 1kzte in a lux for a few k, swap and sell whats left to make your money back.
Thats the only way to do it cheap...if u r not able to swap wiring/booty fab up bits, then look for a 2nd hand lux with a good 3-5l motor/swap sell etc.
