Looks like there will be a 4WD Action shootout at this years Son of Trials. Several staffers from 4WD Action will be each jumping into the 55 series from the Bush Mechanics Challenge and testing their driving skills. Same Truck, Same Tracks, Same Weekend - they have no excuses now.

Brendo - I hope you are one of them. We are all looking forward to seeing your skills put to the test against those young guns in the office mate.

A brief update

We have just decided to relax the rules on engine swaps. Engine swaps will be allowed, but obviously you can not be in standard class with this modification.

This will be my first SOT experience, and Id like to know what paperwork Ill need to bring with me for entry, ie, rego, licence, etc.
Also, do I have to have someone in the vehicle with me when Im doing the stages?? As My Mrs is coming but she will be on camera duty from the side. And none of my mates are going down to enter, so Ill have no navi/timekeeper.
If I just get a stopwatch, could I go by myself??

Hi Dudelux

Bring your rego and license.

You do not need a navi, however they can be helpful (or a hinderance depending on the navi :? ). All stages are timed - ie closest to the time wins (NOT fastest time). A stopwatch will be helpful. If you are trying to time yourself you just need to be very mindful of watching where you are going and keeping an eye on the obstacles - each stage has a tricky little obstacle to negotiate near the end.

You will probably find someone down there to jump in and watch the clock for you.

Cheers and Good Luck

I have some questions about River Island, Mrs D wants to know what facilities are there, toilets, showers, etc.
I just tried to look up the website but all I could find was something about a nudie colony or something.
Ive never been to SOT or River Island, so I have no idea of what the place has there, does anyone have any pics or info about the camping areas and facilities??
Id appreciate it, as the Mrs wants to know.
Thanks.

Yes is held on the same land and if it wasn't for Col who own's the land the patrol club would not be able to run this event.

There is one small toliet block there with flushing toliets that have been there for years.

Not having a go at you Jess just letting you know.

If you really want to spoil her, let her take the 4by over the hill to the River Island Resort for a couple of hours - day visitors can use the pool/spa etc for around the $25-$30 mark. I did it last year after the SOT events and it was a wonderful way to clean up. Clothing at the Resort is OPTIONAL - if you dont feel comfortable taking it all off in public, then you dont have to. Swimming togs are fine and no-one is nasty if you choose to remain clothed.

I know. ;)

Honestly, I've never seen the Toilet block! Of course you're right, it wouldn't be possible without the support of River Island. I was more having a dig at the young blokes from 2007 who were mortified when they flew past the "turn here" sign. Their own fault!

She hates driving the lux, something to do with no power steering, even before I put the 35s on she didnt like it. I might just point her towards the river  .

Another question, with the vehicles entering the comp, what kind of recovery points do we need, Im asking as I only have hooks on the front at the moment, will I need to get some on the back, one on each corner??

Thanks

There is nothing saying you have to have any, but it is nice if you do.
Your rear tow hitch will do the job.

bayrover, I think that one of the 4wd parks run comps throughout the year, unsure of the levels/classes, Probably have a read through the qld comps though.

Chris usually takes a Saturday arvo tour down to the river and across; in 2008 there were a lot of vehicles, and a few struggled up the other side. Here's a shot of mine, not the deepest part:

This is (or at least wasn't) part of the SoT competition events, but purely a social/sight-seeing drive.
Cheers, Tony

How strict are the organizers on glass?? Im asking as my sauce only comes in glass, and my beer only comes in glass(Ive emailed fosters to find out if plastic bottles are available, which they arent), and Mrs Ds girly drinks only come in glass too.
Im not planning on leaving any behind when I leave, I normally take ALL my rubbish out with me when I leave.
Im really looking forward to this event.
Now if only some1 would lend me a set of 33s they arent using.

We discourage specators and competitors from bringing glass receptacles to the Son Of Trials Event for a number of obvious reasons like people's safety and the post event clean-up and the like.

With a bit of common sense you can use platic containers for sauses etc and limit the amount of glass bottles etc that you need to bring to just the absolute bare minimum.
