HI.

ive just bought my first patrol and am learning the ins and out of coil set ups.

its a gu 4.2TD ute with 3 inch lift (dont know which brand etc as the PO put it in). thought it seems lower than my hilux by alot.

the bit im learning is... i am back to square one knowledge wise just like when i first got a leaf truck and had to learn all about that.

anyway im replacing my rear control arms - as their bent with some heavier ones - stock length and looking at bushes etc.

some mention castor corrrection bushes / or extended arms are needed for 3 inch lifts? but some say its not needed.

is this only necessary in the front end due to syeering geometry? or should it be done with the rear arms as well? I do alot of road k's for work so want / need this truck to drive well.

I plan to run a set of 35 bfg's for play time, but stock or 33's on the road if that effects anything.

the 3 inch lift section in the bible is actually for 5 inch

You do not need to worry about castor on the rear and standard length arms on the rear will be fine for a 3" lift.

You'll know if you need castor bushes as it will wander on flat roads - e.g. won't track well and steering wont return to centre very well, it'll be harder to drive on the highway than it should be.
My gq has 2-3" and would benefit from some, it aint critical but i did notice the change when i put the suspension in - same tyres.

is it possible to get bushes out of old control arms to put into the replacment ones?

my control arms are bent so i got some heavier new ones but but thet came with no bushes.

the bushes look perfect condition. but if its not possible ill fork out the $200 for new bushes - they are expensive bits of rubber!

Befriend someone with a shop press. Then get a piece of pipe that is the same size as the metal outer ring of the bush, and push through. If the bushes are stuffed and need replacing, I have burnt them out, then punched the metal ring.

How many bushes do you get for $200? Remember there are 8 bushes in total on the rear links. Ill have their number if your getting 8

Yeah I had hoped a vice would give me enough to press them out, but no go.

in the end as the lower control arms were stuffed anyway, i cut the outer ring off to get the bushes out and pressed them into my new arms.

was very easy for any one else who needs to do it, cut 90% through one side then cut the other side carefully and when it gets thin it will split open - before you actually right through so you dont ever damage the outer ring on the bush.

i kept wetting it down so the rubber never got too hot.

as for $200 that was for 4 as only the lower arms were bent. the bushes were in excellent condition so all good.
