Hi all, well im what looks like 2 be yet another newbie 2 these forums and just need some advice if u all dont mind
Ok, im after anything and everything u guys and girls know about the 4runner sr5 limited, as im seriously considering buying one soon. I've done heaps of searching on the net, but found very litte, untill i stumbled across this site. Obviously, mechanical, i.e diffs/gearbox/motors etc are top of the list, as well as body, i.e chance of paint fading/rust/sound structure etc, are all the things im interested in finding out. I'd really appreciate any feedback from ownwers, ex-owners or those in the know, as i'd hate 2 rush in and buy a dud 4wd (as it will be my first).

This Forum is more on the Hardcore side of things but a few guys here have started out with what you are looking for. And may be able to help.
Surfection started out with a very clean import Surf and may be able to help you out with some advice.
All i can say is decide what you want to be doing after you have owned what ever you buy for a few months because this will ultimatly decide what you should by.
If you want to end up with big tyres double diff locks and a load of flex. The 4runner is not a great base as the suspension set up and front diff is realy not suitable.
But if you are looking to go on the beach and just general forestry roads then the 4Runner will do fine.

big red hilux, most limited's i've seen are 91's, so thats basically what im after.
RUFF, i realised this was a kind of hardcore forum, haha, but couldnt resist some potential advice, from what seems like alot of pretty knowledgable forby guys. Hey, I bought my first fourby without a great deal of knowledge and was soon ready to sell it when the bug bit and I realised what I chose wasn't up to it
IF I had known about this forum at the time I wouldn't have bought what I did, I would have been better informed about the limitations of my vehicle of choice
You are lucky in that respect I reckon I would advise you to steer away from the 4runner as it is hampered by independant front suspension which may not seem like an issue now but will be a major headache in the future if you get into the sport in any real way
There are ways around it (like surfection did) BUT it would be far simpler to start without the IFS. IMO you can't go past a patrol for combination of capability, comfort and performance, plus HUGE aftermarket support

Ok, thanks for the link RUFF, was leaning 2wards petrol, (otherwise i'd love a surf), but am still contemplating diesel, so dunno yet, but thanks.
mj, 2 be totally honest, i doubt i'll be getting into the hardcore side 4 a while yet, thats what drew me 2 the 4runner, for its price, look, and 'reasonable' rep on light grade terrain. But, by co-incidence, i do quite like the swb patrols with the 4.2 litre, so who knows mate...

hey 4runa,
I own a 91 sr5 ltd v6 few comments that may help ya:
- notoriously thirsty engines (20L/100km around town is not uncommon) i average 17L/100km with moderate driving.
- ifs is only a hampering for serious 4wd work, apart from that it makes the ride very good.
- offroad ability is excellent ive found, has taken me everywhere i wished to go, majorly bush work (sugarloaf) and stockton beach (lavis lane), very capable off road mainly due to good ground clearance. Has good low range gearing.
- the model i chose is a very saught after car (v6) so hunt around and you will find the prices vary greatly. (10000-15000)
- found the auto transmissions in this model were not upto scratch, mate has exact same car and has had nothing but problems the with box.
- model has been known for head failure but u get that.
- particular model in all model 4 runner is the coil sprung rear sags over age and may need replacing.
- its an excellent tourer, specially the heated foot rest with cruise control and comfortable seats~!

All in all I have never regret this choice in car for a second, except when i follow the sierra's through the bush and wombo (my car) get scratched.
