60 series sunroof replacement

Post by flyology »

I have a new sunroof panel I am about to fit to my cruiser its an '87 sahara. Cant find anything on replacement, has anyone done this or have any info on how to? It appears the motor that controls the roof has died (probably because of water leaking in) so I can't move it back or forward.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

thanks!!

Ahh you figured out you need to unclip the trim panel to get to the mechanism.

Where did you find a new sunroof? I had a very rusty one repaired because a new one was ex Japan and there was nothing decent second hand.

Had the trim panel off, just wasnt working till I realized the ignition had to be switched on not just on accessories.

I have had the new panel for about 3 years now, saw it advertised on ebay but it didn't sell. I messaged the bloke and bought it off him for $500.00 which I think was pretty good as the price I got from toyota was about $1200.00.

Ok, I have found out (via trial and error) that it is actually quite easy to get the sunroof panel out and in. I will take some pictures and do a step by step guide so it can go in the bible so it is there for future reference.

Sunroof

Post by Toy12HT »

Im looking forward to seeing the step by step installation. I have a 61 series VX Sahara, japanese import. Are their different types of sunroof setups from the factory? Mine is a little different than that discribed in the Australian workshop manual, particularly the trim.

Ok, I have some pics and it should be enough to see what is needed to remove install the sunroof panel in a 60 series.

Here is what my old panel looks like, it was no where near this bad when i bought the car 5 years ago, but having gaffa tape over it to stop it leaking probably didn't do much to stop rust.....

Ok, first step is to make sure the roof panel goes back and forward. Make sure any rust and debris is cleaned away and not poking up to stop the panel receding back into the roof. open the roof half way, and pull the interior panel of the sunroof down at the front, and then slide it back into the roof, to the rear of the car:

Now you can see where the panel has two angles pieces of steel that guide it into the sliding tracks. these pieces are held on by two 12mm nuts, or are in my cruiser anyway: (see red arrows)

close the roof up, keeping the interior trim/cover panel to the rear. you will then see there is two more places the sunroof is attached to the opening and closing mechanism. There are the main points that it bolts to the mechanism.

Pic of my new panel:

Pic of where the three 12mm nuts hold the brackets to the roof panel:

undo these and the panel should lift out. I had undone all the screws holding the runners to the roof, undone upholstery, taken the roof motor out, only to find out that none of that was necessary. Installation is the reversal.

I hope this helps, I was unable to find anything on this and found out by trial and error.
