I am guessing someone has done a holden injected 5 litre into a a GU wagon before?
What sort of fuel economy are you guys getting out of them?
Also would it be better to go manual or auto?

why would you want to go a 5 litre? 5.7 or 6 litre is genaly the go,

just done a 5.0l into gu,goes well,dont know about economy yet, got about 250km to 50 l gas in my 5.0l gq,8 inch lift ,35s,4.1 diff gears,my gu runs 4.6s gears, with 35s ,revs a little too hard,4.3s would be better,heaps cheaper than a gen 3 conversion........mine is manual,think auto would take too much power away.............good luck

The guy had spent heaps on the motor and a special auto with tricked up shift kits.
I was shocked who gutless it was, sounded sweet but had no balls at all.
I think in a heavey GU it would be very very dissapointing.

i doubt very much it would be cheaper to do a tb48 over a 5.0l!!
there's are reason why these engines(tb48) arn't the engine transplant of choice....
and the bill to fix the heads from running gas..NO THANKS
yes i was dissapointed with my 5.0l gu conversion but the tb45 gave me grief and my transplant and rebuild was cheap to do! almost more so then the repairs that my 4.5 needed...
later this year the poor old(new) 5.0l will become a 355 and be the engine that i thought it would be
it's all well and good people writing off the 5.0l compared to a 350 chev and ls1 garbage but remember it isnt the same capacity to start with and after having been in a ls1 80 and 355 stroker gu i know which one i would rather..!
the 355 shat balls all over the ls1!
ls1 had more balls very late in the rev range but for all out torque the 355 wins hands down!
if you decide on the 5.0l definately put a stroker kit through it and a cam to suit with the usual exhaust mods as well, then you will have a balls of an engine with reliability to match
as usual work out your budget then work from there!

An old school, iron blocked 350 AND by the sounds of it a stroked 308 (to 355) seems to fit the bill of a motor that devlops lazy torque in the LOWER part of the rev range, which is what you'd want in a 4b. Imagine what a 383 stroker could do!!

as im one of those people who had nothing but problems(well 2) with the alloy heads on my 4.5 and jap engines are wayyy more pricy to fix(in parts) then the holden 5.0l or yank chevs or the gen series for that matter!
as for running gas im not sure how the gen's handle it, but i know a head repairer and he's seen more than his fare share of 'melted' alloy holden heads with destroyed valves etc
and as iv said i admit defeat in the power stakes with my 5.0l but not for lastability

got 4.1 ratio diffs but taking them out and replacing them with 3.9 (looking for 3.9 if anyone can help out)
i belive that if you use a holden motor then a holden box should be up its ass every think mates up nicely

In my experience the LS1 performance wise is a far better than the 5 litre, bang for buck wise. I have done both of these engine conversions. I started with the 5litre, it was my biggest regret. I had nothing but problems wuth the 5 litre. They hate water, had dissapointing power. In the quest to get more power i added up what it would cost to do the 355 stroker or put a LS1 in. I decided to put the LS1 in. It didnt cost much more than the 5litre conversion.. It doubled the power, i brought a motor with a cam and new valve springs and internals for $2800, its putting out 300 hp at the rears. I think you would be hard pressed to buy a 5litre and do enough work on it the get that figure for the price. Just my opinion, theres always a big debate over this, so i hope this helps you with the choice.

Expect 25 to 27lt of LPG p/100 city & 21 to 23lt p/100 hwy.
I would go 5 speed manual as lots of power & economy is lost through the auto.
The disapointment with both stock Holden & Chev V8's is they produce max torque too high in the rev range (Holden 3,600rpm,Chev 4,600rpm)which means high revs to create decent power & gearchanges at the sniff of a hill on the highway. In the bush they are great fun but drink heaps.
Install a stocky & you will be disapointed. Build a V8 engine to produce more torque down lower & you should be right. A sroker will be good but you can still get a 5 litre chugging along without one.

What about a 400 SB Chev? Long stroke, low down torque. Very popular with the water skiing fraternity for low down torque.
You could adapt the EFI off an LS1, or any other SBC or just run it on straight gas. There's 1 on Ebay, full reco for less than $3k.
