Hi, I've got an '84 solid axle Hilux which has started rattling in the front end. It seems to come from around the hub area and only rattles when the hubs are locked in.
It does not rattle when the wheels are on left or right lock and when I swerve going in a straight line the rattles start to go away.
Everyone thinks it's the CV's, but I've read in another thread on this forum that it may also be the cardan joint.
Shoud busted CV's always rattle when the front wheels are on lock? because mine don't.
All help greatly appreciated.

It very well could be the front driveshaft.
I had a very similar problem in my 86 lux. It sounded like a bad diff problem, but I swapped the front shaft and its good now.
Just climb under, check for any play along the front driveshaft, check- where it goes into the front diff, the uni joints along the shaft, and where it goes into the transfer case.
The problem with mine was on the double cardan joint. I replaced it with one I had sitting in the shed and its been fine since.
You may be able to get away with giving it a good greasing. But if its got too much play in it, then just replace it. Its only 4 bolts at each end.
