Could be unburnt fuel, could be water.

i'd strip it down definately since it's out of the car. get the head checked for cracks as joel said could be water.
other way is you can start the motor up while it's on the ground with no water in it. no water means it can't burn it and make smoke.

you wouldn't want to get the fuel system done only to find that out. throw in some new bearings seals and rings while you're at it.

white smoke could also be an injector leaking. It could also just be a blocked fuel filter or the gauss filter in the back of the pump.

i'd start with the injectors as that's the cheapest thing. then check the pump.

I would suggest running it up for an hour under supervision, there is no better way to get to know your motor than spending some time with it running (under moderate load and even free revving). If that means dropping it in to a vehicle, well thats not too much of a set back, even if it does turn out to be a rebuild.

IMHO I wouldn't lean to a fuel issue, this would usually throw black smoke, and 12h-t's don't generally have too many high pressure pump issues, injector's can wear out easily (like all D's) but still would be a darker smoke.

12h-t's carry a cast iron head so IMHO it's unlikely to be a crack or warped head unless something really serious has gone down (without you knowing about), otherwise is more than likely a gasket failure, i.e. inlet mani, head etc. Just a case of tracking it down.

Do you have any ideas about the KLM's of this motor, and what is the future purpose for the motor, farm implement or long distance tourer?

gday bevis,i can tell you it roughly has 350,000 on it,but something strange i noticed was my 2h takes 10ltrs of oil with a filter, were i checked the level in the 12ht when i got it home, the oils not milky but there is twice the amount of oil in it!!!!! not good for any engine.

Certainly isn't! I assume you mean it had 20litres of oil in the sump, this would cause some serious issues, lucky you haven't taken it on any steep hills or leans, that would have sucked

Not sure what you mean with that last post, but I have a 12HT and white smoke can be unburnt fuel.

(I don't see how you could get trans fluid in the engine)

I recall on a trip to the Territory a few years back, I pulled over for a quick break and turned the ignition off, but didn't turn the turbo timer off which was on 5 minute setting (engine still running) drove down the road for a minute and the engine dies (turbo timer shuts it down). The first thing that I did, without really thinking about it is put the right foot down and pump a few times, which fills the cylinders with fuel.

Started up after pulling over and it revved big time, and blew a big cloud of light gray smoke out the back, NOT black. (Black is burnt fuel, and too much)

So it could be something to do with your fuel system......

Hi mate, My last ride was a 75 series 2h powered (underpowered) ute, I threw a second hand turbo kit on it, which made it haul serious @ss. trouble was the same thing, it would blow white smoke after driving around off boost for a while and then going away after some right foot action.

Long story short, I had EVERYTHING checked, injectors, pump, compression, filters, etc etc etc. In the end all it needed was a restrictor (2mm orifice) in the oil feed line. :bad-words:

Trust me, whatever it is, it'll be the last thing you check!!!!

Man, I miss the power

That is exactly what is happening with my Hilux, I was leaning towards a leaky injector as the lux the kit came off didn't do it. So where do you get a restrictor for the oil feed from?

Mate, I used a brass fitting and just soldered it up then drilled it out. Easy.
I guess you could weld up a steel fitting and get the same results.
