licence plate position?????

G'day guys,
I have just bought a low mount winch and I am about to mount it on the bull bar .. my question is.... Currently my number plate is in the centre of the bull bar, where i need to place the winch roller fairlead.. what is the law conserning plate position? I want to move it to one side .. will this ... to the best of anyones knowledge be ok?. if no one knows for sure. where could i go to find out? I tried to look up the regulations on the vic roads web site, but that didn't help.. any info would be a help.....

I moved mine to the right side. I didn't check if its legal, but haven't been pulled over and when I went through a breath test they didn't say anything. Plenty of Turbo VL's getting around with them like that, but lets not talk about the quicker quarter mile time when you get 3cm squared more fresh are through the radiator!

Only drama I've had is when going into some servo's, they think I dont have a plate and won't switch on the fuel bowser! Once they realise its on the side there it's all okay, depends on where their cameras are positioned.

If someone finds a legal reference for this it would be handy to know....

According to a senior constable with roads / traffic managment.... the excact ruling is......... A number plate must be clearly visable at 10 meters on a 45 degree angle in either side passenger and drivers side . if a plate is to be off set moving it to the passenger side is more preferable than drivers side .. as he put it " so those bloody revenue raising cameras can see it better". ( he wasn't a fan of them either). He then went over my car top to bottom checking for anything that would be considered un roadworthy... and said the only thing he could see was that the front guards needed mud flaps .... but then he would only canary the vehicle.. If i was being an arrogant turd to him.. so it's all good

if you get some maglight brackets , you can use htose to fix your number plate to the fairlead rollers, I have tried it with mine and its a solid and firm fit.. you might want a chain to make sure your number plate doesnt go walkies too easily..

Ray. no they didn't come with mud flaps but I belive he was talking about the fact that the running boards that are suposed to be there... arn't and this then exposes the tyres from the back.....

Shorty... I was thinking about resessing the roller fairlead in but as it's a little big i thought i would get a hawser fairlead then tube and bracket the number plate on so it can be removed... as i said i WAS thinking about it... your mag light brackets sounds great plus it would save me a lot of hassle... cheers....
have you tried the hinged plate idea.. a mate told me about it having never seen what he means i can only assume .. a piano hinge across the top so it flips up out of the way when in use?..

Would a slimline front plate make any difference?

I had a slimline front plate made up for mine when I modded the bullbar to fit larger lights, so that it still fits above the fairlead.

I did the same thing years ago when I installed a winch to my front bar. My no plate was in the same osition as yours originally, right where the fairlead rollers needed to be. I just welded a couple of tabs to the hoop to mount the no plate to, keeping it in the centre of the bar. You could do the same with the upper tube on your bar.

how did you mount the winch, bolts down or forward onto another plate . bolting the fairlead to the face as shown. was it a low mount or high mount?

in relation to the drum spool, does the roller fairlead sit slightly lower than the winch? so the cable goes on with out putting pressure on the fairlead. cause Im finding that a little bit of a problem...

from memorie the holden hq/hz range of sedans had the sprung flap over the rear fuel tank filler pipe, maybe this could be modded to suit the front over a winch fairlead.

G'day guys... Well Ive come up with the remedy for me..
I have converted the bar as seen above into a winch bar... for .... $ 27.00
total cost of steel... I will post up a pic in the next few days. I will have it finished by monday and will put it up then... cheers for the advice
