4.0L V8 (soarer) and 4spd Auto into Rangie
Hey people, I am still tossing up about 1000 option os repairing / replcing my auto transmission.
I came acroos this........ Toyota (jap imported) Soarer 4.0L V8 and 4spd Auto box with wire and computer $2200ono.
Basically who has any thoughts on this conversion into my RR, I am sayin this cause It will not only replace my faulty gearbox but my 3.5L water hatin V8 and also the shitty Lucas electrics.
I can afford the initial outlay for the engine and box (gotta find out abit more about the year model etc etc) just all the hiden cost and fidly bits that might be to much of a surprise for me.
Also if i do get it who wants to help me install the damn thing ? ? ? AS I WILL HAVE NO IDEA WHATS GOIN ON. In return I can offer beer and my 3.5L rover V8 will be of no use to me so it may be up for grabs aswell....
This is just an option that my brain seems to like............dont know about my wallet yet thou
I realize the expenses of exhaust and also mating it to my Borgwarner (will replace with an LT230 eventually) xfer case.
I didnt bother the fella to much as I wanted your opinions first before i ask 1million Questions

hmm Damn you raginrover
I though the good points were that I will be getting rid of the lucas electrics (something i would like to do) and also the fact of the 32Valve Quad Cam V8s efficiency.
How much would engineering generally set you back as I am already engineering the suspension work.....
Insurance will be a bitch - yeah i guess so but insurance is alway gonna be a bitch and I may just take the ctp only option.
Ow well back to the repair stage i guess

Lexus 4L will just fir, use teh auto - ut ask BJ what mates to the auto....
I know that you can use 80 series gear behind it - may as well swao the diffs to cope with the grunt to....
Allow $5-10K overall brother - unless you are real friendly with an auto elec, a cheap mechanic and a good engineer. or all of the above...

anthony, try toorak tractor company for rebuilds or c/o zf's.
thay are a long way away, melb. but have a good reputation for price and after sales. they may have tips aswell to do with jag stuff?? thats compatible and/or strengthening issues.
only a phonecall!!
try getting a tdi zf, thats an expensive excercise!!!!

Anthony the bottom line as far as engine swaps go, unless you can do it yourself, you can't afford it......
How much was the quote on fixing you zf auto ?
I havnt been given a firm quote, I have lots of options and at the moment I can afford to do a full on overhaul using the stronger jag parts.
BUT if i can go acoupler steps better and change everything wouldnt that be heaps er

Michael.
Marks adaptors could make this, but probably shit loads of $$$
I gotta go and check out everything that comes along with the engine so I know exactly what its got and what it doesnt got.
I might be getting one from elsewhere if i do decide to go down this path as BJ has informed me that the price i have is about the norm.
The fella when i called him said it had everything including the exhaust manifold and all the intake gear and hoses hangin off it (then he said I THINK) so i not to sure if he new which engine it was as they have a few in 'the back room'
You can always run something like a np205 divorced transfer case, the gearing sux but you wont have to change output shalves or anything. Just a few new mounts on the chassis and another tail shaft. The xfer is just about the strongest made as well and you can get for about $500

Anthony, you have not even taken your car to a tranny specialist to see what is wrong with it....
Now you are wanting to spend a whole heap of $$$$ to change motor and gearbox because your g/box is not right....
You would be much better off getting your tranny fixed then look at ways of getting more power from the engine you already own....
Stroke it to 5l if you want, cheap enough...no engineering issues...
I could go on and on...........

I gotta burn of to the hospital (Grandma is not well) I will let you know if any further decision has been made buy the time I get back home
Luv Grimace
I will buy your ZF off you
Well.
Rod hadfeild do a conversion kit for manual 80 boxes to lexus' then you can run bullet proof gear then...
Like I said - allow serious dollars!!!
I'd be keen on a rebuild on the ZF(should NOT be more than $1500) and a good day mucking around getting it in/out....
Be better overall bro.

Like Ragin'Rover said, fix the auto. The rebuiold of your ZF will set you back tiops about 3K anyway, not what I consider expensive as you will get well over 200,000kms of service, and you probably won't have the Rangie by then anyway (unless you are keeping it for like, like my Rangie now!!).
I guess I'm a bit of a purist, but once you piss about with anything that is non-standard (unles you have a good knowlwedge of conversions and do most of the work yourself), I wouldn't bother. It would be easier to keep your ZF (rebuilt hopefully) and do an engine conversion this way.
Just my comments. good luck anyway.

hmmmm more power isnt the main reason i was looking to change the engine, I just read so much good shit about these engines, and how efficient they are etc etc.
K landy man say I take the stroke path (good cause I can rebuild my ZF and keep just about everything) how much are the complete stroker kits (if there is any) and to what stroked amounts can I get ? ? ? All pricing can be approximates.
I dont know much about opening up an engine to install the kits and cams n shit like that, if its reletively easy then that would put it on top of the list.
See i have to take my ZF out so I figured while I do one thing I may aswell think about doing the rest.
I think no matter what i do its gonna be good but I was also thinkin the toyota V8 would be alot more efficient in the end (power/fuel/reliability wise) also it would involve removing half the rover electrics a very good thing considering an installed an tuned haltech will cost me over 2grand.
There is just toooo much stuff, I want my V8 to feel like a V8 not just sound like one.

well i recon its one of the sweetest sounding V8 around & with camshaft a 217 dynotec cam they go a treat not much you have to do to em to get them to go
Anthony dont know who long the toyota v8 is so with the viscous fan set up it has does it fit?? Or you going to have to go thermo fan set up,New engine mounts, rewire the car, sump modefied??,or cross member?? modefied gearbox cross member, new exhaust mounted, tailshaft modefied, engineers certificate, ect i cant see 5 k getting you much.
Get your zf fixed of buy a second hand one out of a disco, get it mobile save your dollars & do the engine.
Cheers Mal
