Gluing tarpaulins

Post by PJ.zook »

I need to be able to somehow attatch an aluminium pole to the material that the more expensive non-canvas tarpaulins use. It can either be solidly secured to it, or slide through a sleeve, whatever. Im just after ideas how to actually attatch them together. Can you get some kind of good permanant glue to maybe glue a sleeve down the middle of the tarp to slide the pole into maybe? Any other ideas?

Is this to act as a ridge pole?
I'm not sure if i would trust any of the canvas type glues out there for this type of thing, it would cop a fair bit of upward force from the wind, the best way i can think of to get a sleeve in it would be to get it sewed, if you can picture if you were to fold tarp in half, then say 10cm in from the seam you run a few rows of stitches along the whole length, then open the tarp up so sleeve is on the upper side of tarp, then the stitching will be across the sleeve and on the outside of tarp which will eliminate stitches leaking...i can't imagine an industrial sewing machine joint charging too much to run a few stitches along a tarp and it will be heaps stronger than glue...

Yes its to act as ridgepoles. Its a good idea, but the way i have set it up, i can just fit the whole awning in using a 2500mm wide sheet, and if i fold it up like you suggest it will no longer fit unfortunately.
Can i maybe rivet through the tarp into the aluminium poles and use a little coon under the rivets?
Could i maybe use vinyl glue maybe, or stitch some velcro onto the tarp to wrap around the poles like a lot of gazebo's do?

sikaflex pj!

or go buy a eyelet kit and install eyelets down the line to make a pocket...This you can do yourself and its a pretty tough way to join two bits of tarp material....
