waste gate jammed

Post by Slayer »

had the bonnet open today with the engine runnin and noticed soot around the waste gate on my arb turbo.. upon closer inspection it seems to be blowing out down around the turbo propper, and when u give it some revs u can see the smoke commin out.. waste gate is jammed shut and isnt moving if u boost it then come off the throttle suddenly... should it??

going to take the top off it and have a look later, but just want to ask if any one else has had a leakin turbo like this?? im assuming its being caused by the extra pressure when the waste gate doesnt open??

cheers for any input..

you will proberly find that it has cracked around the waste gate mine wasnt working and put it on the dyno as it will only boost underload not just standing and reving it. and found that is wasnt working so i pulled it apart had it welded and machined and put it all back together. with the waste gate disconnected i was making 4psi now im making 12psi plus if i rev it hard enough and a decent load on it

ok just took the top off, seems the rubber diaphram thingo that pushes the waste gate open and shut is torn.. anyone know if these are a commonly stocked item?? do they vary between turbo models?? .. and roughly how much is it going to cost to replace.. will arb stock them or will i have to go to some sort of specialist??? also what sort of damage can be done by driving with it stuffed?? worth the risk??

I have just had my turbo completely rebuilt by G.C.G at Condell park.
The service was fantastic. I walked in off the street and begged for their best turn around and got it back completely rebuilt including bead blasted manifolds and a crack repaired in 24 hours.
Talk to Mark on 9708 2122.
I'm not associated with the company but was real impressed with the service. Even had full written instructions on how to reinstall.

ok good good, got all parts today able to build up with second hand bits, 52 bucks all up..
put it all back on, but now theres a leak behind the wastegate where the pipe goes from it into the exaust.. going to try high temp putty stuff called u kneed it.. need picies of where its leakin to explain, and i spose only people with similar turbos would udsterstand, put it seems to be leaking even at idle, when the waste gate is infact closed.. or should be.. so this makes me think sumthin is stuffed inside the waste gate propper.. the little arm that controls it goes up and down smoothly.. and u can feel pressure on it when the motor is boosting, so its not disconected or anythin, but could have a hole in it?? thus causing the leaky gasket further down the line which i believe looks to be behind the waste gate, and shouldnt be leaking when its closed.. argh, fukin turbo.. wanna rip the thing off and pi$$ on it!

which 3 litre diesel? factory or aftermarket turbo? for aftermarket turbos, gains diminish over about 10psi, and intercooling is a good idea with anything over 8 - 9 psi. boosting up over 10psi increases the risk of high exhaust temperatures, precombustion chamber cracking/dropping, head gasket damage, and the power gains just aren't worth the potential extra problems
.

get it properly dyno/pyro tuned and it should go pretty hard as is.

Thanks dumbdunce.
I started another topic on boost
http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/PHP_Modules/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=15840
its a dts aftermarket tubo (Mechanical Injection)
On the dyno it gets 76Kw(103HP) With 10Psi boost
