My ute comes up next month and I've narrowed it down to a Hilux sr5 dual cab or the 76 GXL Wagon. (Not the patrol - too thirsty / poor motor)

I would like to tow my buggy which sort of rules out the hilux (2250kg tow). I have Cape a cape trip planned for next year, and some general touring also.

This Will also be used as support vehicle for my race car - so might tow buggy through marginal tracks.

Who is happy with the 76?


Any thoughts (by those who own either)

My dad has a 79 ute with the v8 turbo motor, very happy with it. Tows his camper van well he also tows a tool trailer daily and gets about 13L/100km. Only real complaint is the seats.

Good stuff. I test drove one in Mackay - and the seats are plain.
I decided to keep my spare pair of Mastercraft Pro 4's seats and I'll fit them in the front as I drive 220k's per day.

I drive the 79 V8TD's at work, and thats pretty much sealed me on looking at a 76 series now!

The only complaint ive got looking at them is that its $64K for a GXL and you need to pay another $2300 for aircon! :cry:

I've only had my 76 cruiser now for 2 weeks. Its simply a great car, only done 500 km so i'm no expert on it yet. Off to the high country this easter. Was a big step up from 1997 diesel troopie. I got mine with the double diff lock option, they seen to be alot cheaper (about $800) then ARB air lockers. I would say go for the 76.

Thats similar to what ive been getting as a private buyer- Looking at a significantly better price with salary sacrifice leasing as a gov employee though- makes them slightly decent value for money.

Definately get the factory lockers, gives them one less thing to bitch about if you break a driveline component under warranty.

I'm starting to get excited about the 76! a mate just bought the 70 ute and I went looking with him.

can you salary sacrifice a car and pay mortgage repayments with s/s or is their a cap. Paula works for qld health!

i got one of our work 79 V8's nearly chirping and squirming the hips changing first to second on a dry road (giving it some mumbo) the other day... My 1KZ hilux might be punching big numbers for a 1993 turbo diesel, but that V8 Noise... its just so addictive!

Thinking the graphite colour mate.

I have been looking at the steinbauer chips and they make 180 odd kw and 530nm which would be sweet and on my list!

there has been problems with the TDv8's blowng smoke and using oil.

My neighbor is a mechanic and reckons the oil use problem is because they have so much power they neverr get driven hard enough to bed in rings etc, he knows of a couple that have been driven hard and have had no problem with using oil

That would figure with ours- never had the oil consumption issues, or smoke issues, because they are driven HARD every day

76s rock. Sure they are old fashioned, bare essential type vehicles priced way too high.

But if value for money is your thing buy an old fashioned pootrol or something second hand.

But imagine popping a 5 link coil setup in the rear with a suitable track change, you would have a very capable tourer that has the ability to crawl as well.

I will do this one day :?

That feeling of mashing the loud pedal on the 4.5TDV8 is worth about $10K on its own personally :D

according to a friend that has one, apparently they have figured out the oil problem, and it is fixable, its just convincing them that it has the problem is a hassle, because they have to check the oil and record that its using it several time before they will fix it

its not a major fix tho, all fairly simple, there getting theirs tested now

Not only is it cheaper, your warranty on the CV's and diffs remains intact too.

Do it, you wont retret it! I've had mine since july 08 and love it. It tows the trailer easy. Good on fuel too. The factory lockers are worth the money.

I work for St Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne. My Salary Packaging in currently going straight to my mortgage and my other loans. I do have the option of leasing a car if i want to. With my salary packaging, the maximum amount that I can claim is $9,095 per annum.

If I choose to lease a car through my salary packaging provider (Maxxia, previously known as McMillan Shakesphere), I can claim over and above the $9,095, in fact I don't know if there is a limit...

My issue with the leasing of a car is that they need the car to be no more than 7 years old at the end of the leasing term (not an issue for you), although they will lease classic cars in some instances. You can also claim fuel, tyres, servicing and other automotive expenses in your leasing as well, so everything is before tax.

On one occasion, I was considering buying a fully restored Ford 351c XA ute, which was around $15,000. I told them that I would need $200 petrol per fortnight and worked out how much extra I would need for servicing and tyres, etc. In the end, it was going to cost me $450 before tax per fortnight, and my net income would reduce by about $300. These prices would be completely different for you, but i'm just giving you an example of what they may offer you, or your partner, if in fact your provider do offer you this option...
